When it comes to a huge project like Wicked, it all starts with deciding how the world will look. For this, the team brought together a group of concept artists and a VFX crew early on to bring their ideas to life. The results are clear: the film earned Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Costume Design, as well as eight other nominations.

Creating characters like Doctor Dillamond (voiced by Peter Dinklage) took careful planning. The concept artists and VFX team spent time at a goat sanctuary to study different breeds.

This helped them build a more realistic design for the character. Concept artist Dan Baker mentioned how important it was to collaborate closely with director John M. Chu throughout the process.

This level of detail wasn’t just for Doctor Dillamond. Every animal character in the movie had to be created from scratch. The team mixed various designs and characteristics before deciding on the final look.

The Ozdust band, for example, was another challenge where the VFX team had to find the right combination of size and proportions to create a visual spectacle that would captivate viewers.

Wicked continues to perform well at the box office, having crossed the $700 million mark recently. This makes it one of the highest-grossing non-sequel films ever. As it heads to streaming, it’s likely that the movie will keep breaking records.

Besides the nominations for special effects and costume design, Wicked also picked up nominations in major Oscar categories, including Best Picture and Best Acting for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
