Nicolas Cage’s 85% Horror Hit ‘Longlegs’ Is Getting a Sequel with Changes
Big moves are happening in Hollywood again, especially in the realm of horror films. Studios are increasingly focusing on dark narratives, peculiar characters, and eerie worlds that keep audiences coming back for more. When a movie resonates significantly, it often paves the way for additional stories set in the same universe.
Currently, one of the most critically acclaimed horror films in recent years is set to receive a sequel, albeit with some notable changes.
This is the case with ‘Longlegs’. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new project related to the film is officially in development, but it will not be a direct sequel.
Director Osgood Perkins is returning to write and direct the new film, with Nicolas Cage also reprising his role as a star and producer. However, this time, the project has shifted to Paramount Pictures, which has taken over from the original distributor, Neon.
The report indicates that the new film is being described as something “set in the Longlegs universe” rather than a straightforward sequel. This suggests it will delve into the same world, but with a different storyline and potentially new characters or perspectives.
The original film debuted in 2024 and quickly became a surprise success. It followed an FBI agent, portrayed by Maika Monroe, who investigates a bizarre case involving murder-suicides linked to a serial killer known as Longlegs. Cage’s portrayal of the killer was noted for its unusual intensity.
The film performed exceptionally well at the box office, grossing around $128 million worldwide on a budget of less than $10 million. This made it the highest-grossing domestic release for Neon and one of the most significant independent film successes in recent years.
Sources indicate that Neon is not involved in the new project due to the increased scale and budget, which exceed what the company typically manages. Meanwhile, Paramount has been expanding its horror lineup, collaborating with various producers and filmmakers to enhance its presence in the genre.
At the same time, Perkins has remained active. Following the success of ‘Longlegs’, he directed other horror projects and recently completed work on a new film titled ‘The Young People’, featuring Nicole Kidman among its cast.
Cage also has several upcoming projects. He is set to appear in the series ‘Spider-Noir’ on Amazon Prime Video, and later this year, he will portray football legend John Madden in a film directed by David O. Russell.
For now, details about the new ‘Longlegs’ story are being kept under wraps. However, with the same director returning and a larger studio backing it, the project is already capturing the attention of fans of the original.
