‘Sacrifice’ First Trailer Features Chris Evans in a Volcanic Hostage Crisis with Anya Taylor-Joy
Netflix has established itself as a platform that takes bold creative risks with its genre-blending original films, and its latest offering is shaping up to be one of the year’s most unpredictable releases. The upcoming satirical thriller pairs two of its biggest stars in a narrative that intertwines commentary on celebrity culture with something much stranger lurking beneath the surface.
This intriguing story comes from French filmmaker Romain Gavras, known for ‘Athena,’ marking his debut in English-language direction with a script co-written alongside ‘Succession’ writer Will Arbery. Filmed in stunning locations across Greece, including a volcano in Santorini and a marble quarry in Volakas, the film boasts a visually striking backdrop that complements its increasingly chaotic narrative.
Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for ‘Sacrifice,’ confirming that the film will be available on the platform in the United States and France starting October 16. The trailer showcases Chris Evans as Mike Tyler, a struggling movie star attempting to reclaim his fame at a star-studded charity gala, only for the evening to devolve into a hostage crisis when Anya Taylor-Joy’s character and her followers invade the event.

Taylor-Joy portrays Joan, the leader of a radical group convinced they are destined to fulfill a volcanic prophecy meant to cleanse the earth. Vincent Cassel and Salma Hayek Pinault play the billionaire couple hosting the gala, with the trailer depicting Tyler awkwardly navigating a room filled with ostentatious wealth before the situation spirals out of control.

In addition to its central trio, ‘Sacrifice’ features an eclectic ensemble cast, including Ambika Mod, John Malkovich, Swedish rapper Yung Lean, and singer Charli XCX. According to the film’s official press materials, the narrative “takes aim at celebrity culture, media spectacle, performative activism, and elite hypocrisy,” while also exploring broader themes of faith, conviction, and redemption as the hostage situation compels everyone involved to confront their true beliefs.
The film had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2025, providing it with an early festival run before its wider streaming release later this year. With Taylor-Joy also set to appear in ‘Dune: Part Three’ and Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ before the year concludes, ‘Sacrifice’ fits into a particularly busy fall schedule for both actors as they approach some of their most high-profile projects yet.
Given its blend of satire, thriller elements, and genuinely bizarre premise, ‘Sacrifice’ is poised to become one of Netflix’s most talked-about original releases this October.
