Showrunner Teases an Exciting “In-World Thing” for ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 That We Haven’t Seen in ‘Game of Thrones’

HBO’s House of the Dragon is heading into its third season, and according to showrunner Ryan Condal, we’re in for an interesting addition.
The prequel to Game of Thrones has already explored visions and mystical figures, but something else from the books is making its way into the show. Condal hinted at this in a recent episode of his podcast, The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of.
The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, much like Game of Thrones was adapted from A Song of Ice and Fire. Of course, not everything from the books makes it to the screen.
This time, though, Condal teased an ‘in-world thing’ that wasn’t in Game of Thrones but exists in the books. He downplayed it as ‘a smaller detail, not a big thing,’ but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating.
The most popular guess? A Valyrian glass candle. These ancient objects, made of dragon glass, supposedly let sorcerers see events from far away and even communicate over long distances.
While the show has already dipped into magical elements—like Daemon’s Weirwood visions and the Green Man at Harrenhal—this would add a new layer to the fantasy side of Westeros.
As Season 3 gears up, the battle between Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) is far from over. The Greens are gaining new allies, including James Norton as Ormund Hightower, Otto’s nephew and Alicent’s cousin.
Meanwhile, the Blacks will need every advantage they can get. Could a glass candle play a role? We’ll have to wait and see.
Condal didn’t give away much about filming but did confirm that production starts in early 2025. ‘2025 is gonna be utter madness,’ he said, hinting at a packed schedule through the fall. There’s no official release date for Season 3 yet, but we’ll be keeping an eye on it. For now, you can stream the first two seasons on Max.
