A sequel to the 2010 hit movie The Social Network is officially in development, promising a fresh take on the evolving world of tech and social media. Industry insider Daniel Richtman recently shared that The Social Network Part II will expand beyond the story of Facebook, introducing new characters and diving into the broader landscape of social media and technology.

The journey to this sequel began years ago. In 2019, Aaron Sorkin, the screenwriter behind the original film, mentioned that producer Scott Rudin was pushing for a follow-up. Sorkin noted that plenty of dramatic events in the tech world since the first movie’s timeline offered rich material for a new story. That same year, Jesse Eisenberg, who portrayed Mark Zuckerberg in the original, expressed enthusiasm about returning, especially if Sorkin was involved. By 2020, Sorkin made it clear he’d only write the sequel if David Fincher, the original director, was on board. Fincher, however, described the project as complicated, hinting at challenges in revisiting the story.

A significant development came in 2024 when Sorkin announced he was crafting a script that ties the sequel to the January 6 Capitol riot, adding a bold new angle to the project. On June 25, 2025, the sequel was confirmed, with Sorkin not only writing but also taking on the role of director for the first time in this franchise.

Interestingly, there’s no word yet on whether Mark Zuckerberg’s character will play a central role in the sequel. Richtman’s report didn’t mention Zuckerberg, sparking speculation about whether Eisenberg will reprise his role or if a new actor might step in. It’s also possible the filmmakers are keeping details under wraps for now.

The original Social Network left a lasting mark when it debuted in 2010, earning critical acclaim and four Golden Globe awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Beyond awards, the film inspired audiences.

Music industry commentator Bob Lefsetz said it motivated viewers to chase their entrepreneurial dreams, while entrepreneur Dave Knox predicted it could inspire a new generation of innovators. Even Zuckerberg, despite disliking his portrayal, acknowledged that the movie encouraged people to start their own businesses.

The sequel aims to capture the same energy but with a wider scope, exploring the dynamic and often controversial world of social media today. As the project moves forward, excitement is building for what promises to be a compelling new chapter.

The decision to expand the story beyond Facebook is a smart move, given how much the tech world has changed since 2010. Tying in real-world events like the Capitol riot could make the sequel feel timely and relevant, but it’s a risky choice that might polarize audiences.

I’m curious to see how Sorkin balances the drama with the broader tech narrative and whether the absence of Zuckerberg’s character signals a bold new direction. What do you think about this sequel?
