Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 classic Starship Troopers is getting the remake treatment, according to a report. It’s no surprise, given Hollywood’s current obsession with redoing popular IPs. However, this remake feels unnecessary, as the original is already a standout in sci-fi.

The movie’s plot is centered around Johnny Rico, played by Casper Van Dien, who joins the Mobile Infantry in a future where Earth is at war with giant alien bugs. As Rico rises through the ranks, the film critiques patriotism, duty, and sacrifice.

Starship Troopers is a clever mix of social satire, violence, and dark humor, making it a tough act to follow.

Sony’s decision to remake this feels like an attempt to cash in on the franchise’s success, especially given its popularity in video games. But it’s hard to see why anyone would want to change what Verhoeven created.

The director’s ability to blend graphic violence with satirical commentary is almost impossible to replicate. This has already been proven with remakes of other Verhoeven films, like RoboCop and Total Recall. Both failed to capture the magic of the originals, bombing with critics and audiences alike.

Verhoeven himself has spoken about how unsatisfied he was with these remakes. He watched both and found them lacking in the subtlety and self-awareness that made the original films so impactful.
