‘Star City’ has ventured into perilous territory as Valya confronts the fallout from his most significant mistake yet. Following the revelation of his covert involvement in American espionage, the cosmonaut finds himself in a dire situation, leading to a daring escape plan that propels him toward a mission on Venus.

This choice places Valya in a precarious position. Rather than facing the consequences on Earth, he opts to embark on the Venus mission, granting himself a temporary reprieve as authorities close in. However, actor Adam Nagaitis reveals that Valya’s decision was not made with a well-thought-out strategy; it was a choice fueled by fear and the instinct to survive.

In an exclusive interview with SYFY Wire, Nagaitis elaborated on Valya’s mindset after his betrayal comes to light. He noted that the character is no longer thinking rationally and is merely reacting to the imminent danger surrounding him.

“He’s acting on instinct,” Nagaitis stated. “He’s animalistic at that point. His instinct has kicked in.”

The situation becomes even more complex as Valya not only seeks to evade the authorities but also grapples with the loss of trust from his wife Tanya, portrayed by Ruby Ashbourne Serkis. Upon discovering his deceit, Tanya hesitates to join him in his attempt to escape the Soviet regime.

For Nagaitis, Valya’s emotional turmoil is just as crucial as his physical flight. He explained that his character realizes he may never return to the life he once knew. “However it ends, ‘I miss the love of my life and I’m doomed,’” Nagaitis expressed while reflecting on Valya’s internal struggle.

Serkis also shared her perspective on Tanya’s response during her interview with SYFY Wire. She suggested that Valya’s choice was somewhat justifiable, given the escalating danger he faced on Earth. “It’s probably safer up there than it is down here,” Serkis noted.

While the Venus mission marks a pivotal moment for the series, its concept is rooted in historical events. ‘Star City’ incorporates elements from the Soviet space program, exploring what might have transpired had history taken a different path.

The show’s creators have previously drawn from real Soviet space initiatives when crafting the series’ narrative. Co-showrunner Matt Wolpert informed SYFY Wire that the Soviet Union’s interest in Venus was not a mere fabrication for the show.

“Those Soviet probes sent back the only images we have from the surface of Venus,” Wolpert explained. He emphasized that integrating real historical details into the narrative allows viewers to uncover aspects of space history they may be unfamiliar with.

Valya’s journey to Venus also underscores one of the central themes of ‘Star City’. The series intertwines political tension, personal drama, and space exploration, illustrating how ordinary individuals are impacted by monumental historical events.

For Valya, the mission transcends discovery or glory; it represents a desperate bid for survival after his world crumbles. Whether Venus will provide him refuge or merely postpone the inevitable consequences remains one of the most pressing questions as the season unfolds.

Season one of ‘Star City’ and all five seasons of ‘For All Mankind’ are currently available for streaming on Apple TV.
