Few shows make a diplomatic cable feel as thrilling as a car chase, and this ‘The Diplomat’ recap picks up with the stakes higher than ever. The fourth season premiered on Netflix on October 15, featuring all 8 episodes available for binge-watching. It delves into a conspiracy that Kate Wyler would prefer to avoid, creating a tense viewing experience.

Season 3 concluded with a shocking revelation. Kate uncovered that her husband, Hal, and President Grace Penn had covertly taken Poseidon, a formidable Russian weapon, from a sunken submarine near the UK coast. They presented a plan to their allies to encase the submarine in concrete, embedding the lie within the alliance.

Netflix describes the new season as a tale where two marriages threaten to consume each other, and the finale certainly delivers. Kate resigns from her position as U.S. Ambassador to the UK during the G7 summit in Italy, with Chief of Staff Billie Appiah and Secretary of State Miguel Ganon following her lead. Hal also exits, but the season wraps up before clarifying whether he has officially resigned.

Initially, Kate aims to reveal the truth to British intelligence officer Callum Ellis, but Hal and Grace oppose her. Eventually, she consents to deceive him, having ended her relationship and resolved to mend her marriage. A trip to Windsor Castle, rerouted due to protesters blocking access to the airport, culminates in Grace being shot, temporarily granting presidential powers to Hal.

Grace recovers, but those close to her, particularly her husband Todd, notice a change in her demeanor. Her decisions become increasingly erratic, including a plan to deploy warships to the UK coast. Hal chooses a precarious moment to disclose the truth about Poseidon to the British Prime Minister, and the death of Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison leaves Kate without a crucial ally in the British government.

Things escalate when Kate blackmails Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge, contributing to his resignation. Jodie Whittaker’s Bethan Vaughan steps in as the new Prime Minister, learns about Poseidon, and permits Russia to recover its deceased from the submarine. Grace is outraged and instructs Kate to threaten Vaughan with American warships if the decision isn’t reversed.

A significant subplot involves Stuart Hayford, who utilizes the official diplomatic dissent channel to document his objections to Grace’s policies. Kate supports him, believing it will create a written record of opposition within the administration. The channel is designed to shield him from retaliation.

However, Stuart discloses this to others, and when Ganon reviews the complaint, he brings it to Grace. She discovers the author and orders Stuart back to Washington, effectively placing him in limbo. For Kate, this is the clearest indication that Grace will not tolerate dissent.

At the G7, Vaughan is poised to expose Grace’s actions, including the theft of Poseidon and the warships near Britain. Before she can speak, Grace takes the stage and confesses. She frames her actions as necessary for the protection of British citizens and NATO’s territory, criticizing Vaughan for allowing Russia into British waters and reminding the group how quickly the G7 could collapse without America.

This tactic works, and the other leaders do not hold her accountable immediately. This pushes Kate over the edge. She realizes the only way to challenge Grace is from the outside, leading her to resign publicly, which liberates her to address the press.

Billie and Ganon resign as well, followed by Hal. In the final scene, he approaches reporters to make a statement, but the audience never hears what he says. It could signify a break with Grace or a last-ditch effort to salvage the situation without relinquishing the vice presidency.

The walkout sends a clear message that Grace’s own administration does not support her policies. This could undermine her standing with allies and expose her to political and legal repercussions. Hal’s ambiguous action is the biggest cliffhanger, as he has enjoyed being Vice President throughout the season.

Kate was so convinced he wouldn’t relinquish the role that she kept her plans from him. His decision to walk out alongside her suggests a shift, though his motives remain uncertain. Whatever he communicates to the press will influence what unfolds next.

Critics have labeled this season as one of the most intense yet, although one review noted that the political plot occasionally veers into the wild. Season 3 garnered 7 Emmy nominations, including best drama series and acting nods for Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney, and Bradley Whitford. The new episodes continue to spotlight that talented cast.
