Tom Holland to Star in Sony Thriller ‘Penthouse’ From Drew Pearce
Tom Holland has had an extraordinary year, one that many actors can only dream of. He led one of the summer’s biggest blockbusters and appeared in another, with box office numbers reaching historic levels. Now, the star is gearing up for a project that promises to be quite different from his recent roles.
This year, Holland featured in ‘The Odyssey’, portraying Telemachus in Christopher Nolan’s epic. He also reprised his role as Peter Parker in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which premiered on July 31 and received largely positive reviews. Together, these films positioned him at the forefront of summer movie discussions.
According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Sony Pictures has pre-emptively acquired ‘Penthouse’, an original concept from Drew Pearce. The film is being developed as a starring vehicle for Holland, with his production company, Billy17, and Pearce’s company, Point of No Return, involved in the production.
Pearce will pen the script based on his original idea, with Holland and his partners at Billy17 playing a crucial role in its development. While the plot remains under wraps, the project is categorized as a thriller. Currently, no cast, director, or release date has been announced.
Holland, along with his brother Harry Holland and Will South, will produce for Billy17, with Pearce producing for Point of No Return. Ian Fisher will serve as executive producer for Point of No Return, highlighting Holland’s close involvement in the creative process.
Pearce is renowned for his work on ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’, ‘The Fall Guy’, and ‘Iron Man 3’. He has also contributed to ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ and ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’, and directed the futuristic thriller ‘Hotel Artemis’. He founded Point of No Return in 2019.
This deal strengthens an already robust partnership. Billy17 has a producing agreement with Sony Pictures, and Holland has starred in over half a dozen Sony films, including four ‘Spider-Man’ installments and ‘Uncharted’. The studio clearly aims to keep him closely associated with their projects.
That collaboration has yielded significant success. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has grossed over $2 billion globally, shattering both domestic and international box office records. With such achievements, it’s evident why Sony is eager to secure Holland for future endeavors.
Holland is also set to appear in Sony’s untitled film about Fred Astaire, alongside co-stars Margaret Qualley, Sabrina Carpenter, and Talia Ryder. Holland and Billy17 are among the producers, showcasing a different aspect of his talent focused on song and dance.
With ‘Penthouse’ added to his slate, Holland is clearly making an effort to diversify his roles. He has also emphasized that he is not stepping away from Spider-Man. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the ‘Brand New Day’ premiere, he stated he would continue playing the web-slinger “for as long as they’ll have me.”
A thriller from Pearce could be an excellent fit for Holland. Pearce’s work often combines action, humor, and tightly constructed narratives, as seen in ‘The Fall Guy’ and ‘Hotel Artemis’. The title itself suggests a contained, high-stakes story, although specific plot details remain undisclosed.
This project would also provide Holland with the opportunity to lead a film that is not part of a franchise. His recent string of blockbusters has been impressive, but original thrillers can showcase a different range of his acting abilities. With his company shaping the project from the outset, he has greater control over its direction.
Studios are increasingly inclined to support stars who can also produce. Holland fits this mold, with a company that is already developing projects at Sony. ‘Penthouse’ is another indication that Billy17 is emerging as a serious contender in the industry.
For now, details remain limited, and fans will have to wait for casting announcements and a start date. However, the combination of a proven star, an experienced writer, and a studio eager to retain its biggest name is a promising prospect.
