Colter Shaw’s investigations typically conclude with a rescue and a reward, but this week’s ‘Tracker’ ending leaves viewers with a different kind of question. While the missing-persons case is resolved, the final moments hint at complications unrelated to the investigation, underscoring the show’s long-term narrative strategy.

The CBS drama made its return after being renewed for a fourth season in January 2026, starting with the port rescue in “Safe Harbor.” The series has also shifted its filming location from Vancouver to Los Angeles. Some fans expressed disappointment that the premiere barely addressed unresolved storylines from the previous season.

This week’s episode, “Switchback,” aired on CBS on October 11 and took a different direction. Colter embarks on a search for a mother and daughter who disappear while hiking the Pacific Divide Trail, discovering they were being stalked. Although the case wraps up within the hour, the closing scene involving Russell is what will have fans buzzing.

The episode begins with Leanne and Kayla hiking in the Sierra, where Kayla feels they are being followed. Her mother dismisses her concerns. When they miss a supply stop, Kayla’s sister Anya reports them missing, prompting Colter to take on the case.

On the trail, he teams up with Becca, a “trail angel” who has been searching for the hikers. She guides him to a perilous area known as the “Thin Area,” where he discovers a makeshift camp containing Leanne’s bloody backpack. A disoriented Leanne then emerges from the woods, mistaking Colter for her daughter’s abductor.

Leanne recounts that she was knocked unconscious after leaving Kayla to seek help for her twisted ankle. A drifter named Jonah eventually informs Colter that he saw a large man in a baseball cap put Kayla into an old brown truck near Sierra Junction. With Randy’s assistance, Colter narrows the search to a coffee shop called Rise & Grind, where a worker named Diana claims she doesn’t remember the women.

The situation escalates when Becca is struck by the brown truck and rushed to the hospital. Colter’s pursuit leads him to a man named Jack, who dies before he can provide any information. Randy later discovers Jack’s home and learns that Diana is his mother, a woman who had been in a psychiatric facility 30 years prior.

It turns out Diana had been shielding her son all along. Colter finds her holding Kayla at the property, leading to a tense standoff that nearly turns deadly. Just as the situation escalates, Kayla manages to sneak up and knock Diana unconscious, resolving the crisis.

Kayla is joyfully reunited with her mother and sister, and the family continues their journey to scatter their father’s ashes. This provides a neat and satisfying conclusion for a hiking thriller. One critic noted that this marks the second consecutive case that ends on a positive note, hoping future cases will leave a more significant impact on Colter.

However, the real cliffhanger belongs to Russell. Colter has been attempting to reach his brother and finally receives a text in which Russell apologizes for his silence, mentions being busy, and promises they’ll talk soon. The message feels off, and when Colter inquires about Russell’s well-being, he receives no response.

This silence is significant, especially considering how the previous season concluded. Russell accepted a secretive job from a figure involved in a covert government operation to prevent Colter from uncovering a troubling secret about their father, Ashton. He even instructed Reenie not to let Colter track him down, raising numerous red flags.

Meanwhile, Mel asks Reenie to investigate her mother’s murder case. A military officer who worked with her mother, Eric Jeffries, retired shortly before the murder, and his records are sealed. Reenie ends the day looking visibly troubled, hinting that this storyline may soon intersect with Colter’s investigations.

Fans are also speculating whether Becca could be a new love interest for Colter. The two shared an immediate connection, and she earned his respect by encouraging him to pursue the suspect even after being hit by a truck. Executive producer Elwood Reid mentioned to Us Weekly that this season will showcase “the buds of a relationship forming” for Colter, though it remains uncertain if Becca is that person.

Regardless of Becca’s return, this episode clearly indicates that the show is subtly establishing its season-long narratives while maintaining its case-of-the-week format. Additionally, one outlet has noted that ‘Marshals’ has recently surpassed ‘Tracker’ in the ratings, intensifying the pressure to deliver compelling content.
