‘Treasure Island’ Episode 1 Ending Explained: Long John Silver’s Role Aboard the Hispaniola
Pirate tales often feature unexpected twists, and the ending of ‘Treasure Island’ delivers just that with a clever nod. MGM+ has adapted Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure into a darker narrative that explores themes of debt, family, and greed. By the time the final scene rolls around, the peril has already followed its protagonists onto the open sea.
Set in Cornwall in 1788, this six-part series stars Tom Sweet as Jim Hawkins, Hayley Atwell as his mother Bess, and David Oyelowo as Long John Silver. Jack Huston portrays the duplicitous British agent Aaron Graham, while Tomer Capone plays Billy Bones. The adaptation, created by Robert Murphy, premiered on MGM+ on October 11 and reached Paramount+ in the UK the following day.
The premiere episode, titled “The Admiral Benbow,” effectively sets the stage for the entire voyage within just one hour. It introduces a treasure map, a sailor on the run, and a mother seeking an escape from poverty. The episode concludes with a revelation that redefines everything that has transpired: Silver has boarded the Hispaniola as the ship’s new cook.
The story kicks off at the Admiral Benbow Inn, where Bess has found a way to capitalize on her son’s exceptional memory. Jim can glance at a random Bible page and recite it almost flawlessly, prompting Bess to invite local men to bet against him. However, a customer named Nathan Mason accuses her of cheating, highlighting the precariousness of their situation.
A wealthy squire also expresses interest in marrying Bess, but his proposal feels more like a financial arrangement than a romantic gesture. With her husband, a Royal Navy warrant officer, deceased, his pension barely provides for Jim’s future. Despite Jim’s objections, Bess insists on considering their dire circumstances.
Their fortunes shift when a foreign ship wrecks nearby, and a mysterious sailor arrives at the inn. This sailor, Billy Bones, is a former member of Captain Flint’s crew, having spent five years sailing with the pirate. He reveals that Flint hid a treasure on Skeleton Island and created a map indicating its location.
Bess begins to envision how even a fraction of that treasure could change their lives. She and Billy form an unexpectedly personal connection, as he offers her a taste of adventure rather than another practical compromise. This investment in his story makes her more engaged than a typical innkeeper would be.

Billy’s relief is short-lived, as Silver is searching for him, claiming that Billy possesses something that belongs to him. Believing Silver to be lost at sea, Billy panics upon learning the truth. Their reunion is fraught with tension, and the encounter ultimately proves fatal for Billy.
The map also meets a grim fate when Bess destroys it. However, Jim has memorized the route, a crucial detail that gives the struggling widow and her son the one piece of information that everyone else covets.
The squire suspects Bess has kept a copy of the map and writes to his influential relative, Admiral Grey, to alert him. Bess and Jim then head to Bristol, seeking passage to the Caribbean, with Jamaica as a potential destination. With only six guineas to their name, Bess concocts a story about taking a governess position and presents Jim as unwell.
Graham offers them passage aboard the Hispaniola, claiming to be a merchant of luxury goods. His generosity resolves their dilemma, though they remain unaware of his true intentions. One critic from RogerEbert.com notes that this reimagining places Bess at the forefront, with Graham serving as both a rival and a new romantic interest.
The episode concludes on the Hispaniola, where Bess and Jim meet Captain Smollett. He mentions that the ship has a new cook who has impressed the crew, then calls him in to meet them. It’s Long John Silver.
The episode does not clarify how Silver secured the cook position or whether he was aware that the Hawkins family would be aboard. However, it does establish that his role allows him to mingle with the crew without raising suspicion. Silver believes that the treasure information rightfully belongs to him, and the Hispaniola is headed toward the same destination as Bess and Jim.
This sets up a tense scenario where both Jim and Bess are valuable yet vulnerable. Official synopses for future episodes suggest that Silver is laying the groundwork for mutiny while Bess seeks to secure Graham’s protection. It’s a classic tale of ‘Treasure Island’ reimagined for a world of shifting allegiances.
With new episodes releasing weekly and the finale scheduled for November 15 in the US, the adventure is just beginning.
