‘VisionQuest’ Showrunner Terry Matalas Expresses Interest in ‘Avengers: The Children’s Crusade’ Project
Marvel’s streaming trilogy has reached its exciting conclusion with the premiere of ‘VisionQuest‘ on Disney+. The showrunner, Terry Matalas, is already contemplating future possibilities for the characters he has been developing.
This series marks the final chapter of a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ in 2021 and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’ in 2024. Matalas, known for his work on ‘Star Trek: Picard’, follows Paul Bettany’s White Vision as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery, featuring James Spader reprising his role as Ultron and Ruaridh Mollica portraying an older Tommy Maximoff. The 8-episode season will be released weekly on Wednesdays.
In a recent exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Matalas expressed his enthusiasm for adapting a comic book storyline that aligns perfectly with these characters. When asked about a potential ‘Avengers: The Children’s Crusade‘ project, he indicated that he would be thrilled to pursue such an endeavor, although he noted that it ultimately depends on Marvel and that no plans are currently in motion.
The comic, a miniseries published from 2010 to 2012, was written by Allan Heinberg and illustrated by Jim Cheung. It centers on the Young Avengers, Wiccan and Speed, who suspect they might be the reincarnated sons of the Scarlet Witch, as they search for their missing mother. This quest draws in both the Avengers and the X-Men, with Doctor Doom serving as the central antagonist.
This narrative also serves as a redemption arc for Wanda Maximoff, following the events of ‘Avengers Disassembled’ and ‘House of M’, starting with the Scarlet Witch’s absence from the superhero community.
Matalas clarified what would make a project like this appealing to him. He expressed a desire for the entire family to be involved, potentially including Ultron. He emphasized that Vision, Ultron, and the Maximoff family have become integral to his creative vision, and he would relish the opportunity to continue collaborating with Marvel.
This aligns with the themes explored in ‘VisionQuest’, which focuses on Vision’s complex relationship with Ultron, described by Matalas as a father-son dynamic. The series also introduces an older Tommy Maximoff and primarily unfolds within a Mindspace inside Vision’s consciousness, where Ultron resides after being backed up instead of destroyed at the conclusion of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’.

Wanda is notably absent from the series, with Elizabeth Olsen not confirmed as part of the cast. Matalas has indicated that Wanda’s absence leaves the Scarlet Witch presumed dead, mirroring the premise of ‘The Children’s Crusade’ and sparking fan theories.
An exclusive report has suggested that ‘VisionQuest’ may lay the groundwork for a storyline inspired by the comic. While Marvel has yet to confirm any such plans, the anticipation remains high. With Doctor Doom set to appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, releasing on December 18, the comic’s main villain is already on the MCU’s horizon.

For now, Matalas is dedicated to showcasing ‘VisionQuest’ to audiences, expressing pride in his collaboration with Bettany and Spader. While Marvel has not announced any future projects beyond this series, Matalas’s comments reveal his keen interest in continuing the Maximoff narrative.
