Superhero films have a storied history of dominating the box office while often falling short during awards season. Every few years, someone from within the genre voices what fans have long believed, reigniting the debate.

This time, the commentary comes from a familiar face in the Marvel universe. Paul Bettany, known for his role as Vision, has singled out a performance that he believes should have been in the Oscar conversation, one that fans of the franchise will recognize from its epic conclusion.

When ‘Avengers: Endgame’ premiered in 2019, it marked the culmination of over a decade of interconnected storytelling. It also became one of the most expensive films ever made, with a budget estimated between $356 million and $400 million, and it stands as the second-highest-grossing film of all time.

However, the awards landscape told a different story. ‘Endgame’ received just one Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 92nd Academy Awards, which ultimately went to ‘1917’.

Bettany recently highlighted Downey’s performance in ‘Endgame’ as the Marvel role that deserved recognition. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he described it as Oscar-worthy and praised it as an extraordinary performance.

Fans quickly chimed in on the magazine’s Instagram post, many echoing Bettany’s sentiments. One commenter noted that ‘Endgame’ itself should have garnered multiple nominations for its groundbreaking achievements.

This sentiment has been shared by others over the years. During the 2019 awards season, directors Joe and Anthony Russo referred to Downey as the greatest actor of his generation, calling his work in ‘Endgame’ a profound performance that resonated with audiences worldwide.

Scarlett Johansson, who portrayed Black Widow, expressed her confusion in a Vanity Fair cover story about how ‘Endgame’ was overlooked for Best Picture. Disney also made a significant Oscar push at the time, reportedly submitting 13 actors, including Downey, Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo, for supporting categories.

While Downey did receive some accolades for the film, winning Best Hero at the MTV Movie & TV Awards in 2019, he later won an Oscar for ‘Oppenheimer’, adding an intriguing twist to the ongoing debate.

This conversation comes at a timely moment as Downey is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which opens on December 18, this time portraying the villain Doctor Doom instead of Tony Stark.

In a cast interview, Downey discussed the differences between the two characters, noting that Stark’s trauma ultimately shaped him into a hero, while Doom’s experiences had the opposite effect. He also shared that being behind Doom’s mask felt isolating, particularly when observing the rest of the cast interact.

Chris Evans reflected on witnessing Downey’s performance again, recalling how it reminded him of their time filming the original ‘The Avengers’, where he found himself admiring Downey’s work as a fan.

Bettany is also looking ahead to his own Marvel future, returning as Vision in ‘VisionQuest’, which premieres on Disney+ on October 14, featuring a cast that includes James Spader.

Regarding major films, he has expressed confidence that he will appear in either ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, although he emphasized that nothing is confirmed with Marvel. He previously mentioned to The Telegraph that he has some Avengers responsibilities lined up for next year.

The ongoing discussion surrounding ‘Endgame’ stems from its monumental scale. The film required audiences to invest in over 20 movies, with Downey’s character carrying much of the emotional weight.

Superhero films often struggle for recognition beyond technical categories, which is why each new comment from cast members or filmmakers resonates with audiences. With Downey’s return to the franchise and ‘Doomsday’ on the horizon, this conversation is likely to gain further traction.
