Wonder Woman Game Faces Major Setbacks, Future Uncertain
Monolith Productions, known for ‘Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor’, has been developing a Wonder Woman game since its announcement in December 2021. However, recent reports indicate the project is encountering significant challenges. Early last year, the game underwent a reboot, accompanied by a change in directors. Despite these efforts, sources suggest the game is still far from completion and may not even reach the market. Notably, the game has already incurred costs exceeding $100 million.
Initially, the developers aimed to incorporate the Nemesis system, a feature that allowed the protagonist to form bonds with adversaries. This concept has since been abandoned in favor of a more traditional action-adventure approach. Before focusing on Wonder Woman, Monolith spent three years working on a new intellectual property that explored procedural storytelling. However, Warner Bros. preferred to invest in established characters and universes, leading to the project’s cancellation.
Following this shift, studio head Kevin Stephens and many of his directors departed for EA, leaving the remaining team to concentrate on the Wonder Woman game. Despite these changes, lingering issues and technological challenges persist, casting doubt on the game’s eventual release.
In November 2023, job listings hinted at the inclusion of live-service elements in the game, suggesting a possible shift in its design strategy. Additionally, in December 2024, reports emerged that the Wonder Woman game was still in early development stages when it was first announced, indicating that the project may have been revealed prematurely.
These developments raise concerns about the game’s future and whether it will meet the expectations of its audience. The combination of leadership changes, design overhauls, and substantial financial investments underscores the challenges Monolith faces in bringing this project to fruition.
