As Star Wars Day approaches, fans are revisiting classic films and shows from the franchise, leading to a surge in viewership. This year, one unexpected title is capturing renewed interest.

‘The Acolyte’, which debuted in 2024, is now seeing impressive performance on streaming platforms. Despite receiving mixed reviews at launch and its subsequent cancellation, the series has attracted a new audience. Data from FlixPatrol indicates that it has remained on the domestic Disney+ chart for approximately 30 days, demonstrating significant viewership.

Created by Leslye Headland, the show is set before the Skywalker Saga and delves into a darker aspect of the Star Wars universe. The cast features Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Dafne Keen, Jodi Turner-Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Manny Jacinto.

Upon its release, critics generally responded positively, with the show currently holding a 74% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience score is notably lower at 19%. This disparity is often attributed to review-bombing, where a large number of negative ratings are submitted, a phenomenon seen in various projects with diverse casts, such as ‘Captain Marvel’ and ‘Ghostbusters: Answer the Call’.

Despite the renewed interest, ‘The Acolyte’ did not proceed beyond its inaugural season. Lucasfilm stated that the show fell short of viewership expectations and incurred a substantial production cost, estimated at around $230 million.

While this budget is significant, it is not atypical for Star Wars projects. For context, ‘Andor’ reportedly cost about $650 million for two seasons, and ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ had a budget close to $500 million.

The resurgence of interest in ‘The Acolyte’ coincides with the Star Wars franchise’s expansion. A new film, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’, is set to be the first Star Wars movie in several years. On the television front, the franchise has already expanded with series like ‘Andor’, ‘Ahsoka’, ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, and ‘The Mandalorian’. Additionally, another project titled ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ is in the works, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling.

Even though ‘The Acolyte’ faced challenges and did not continue, its current success highlights how audience interest can evolve over time. Streaming platforms often provide shows with a second chance to connect with viewers who may have missed them initially.

This scenario illustrates that early reactions do not always align with long-term interest. A show may struggle at first yet eventually find its audience. It also prompts discussions about the significance of online ratings. What are your thoughts on ‘The Acolyte’s resurgence? Do you believe it deserved another season?
