Claire Danes to Star in New Netflix Romance Series ‘Lovesick’
Claire Danes is making her return to Netflix with a leading role in the romantic drama series titled ‘Lovesick.’
According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has greenlit the project for a straight-to-series order following a competitive bidding process. The series is based on the Israeli show ‘The Best Worst Thing’ and is characterized as a modern romantic tale with a broad emotional range.
In ‘Lovesick,’ Danes will portray Annika, a prominent breast cancer surgeon who finds herself diagnosed with the same illness she treats in her patients. Her life takes a complicated turn when she meets Nate, a rising politician who becomes one of her patients. Their lives intertwine in unexpected ways as the narrative delves into themes of love, illness, family, and tough life decisions.
The series is created by Sarah Treem, who also takes on the roles of writer and executive producer. Treem expressed her excitement about the project in a statement, noting her long-standing desire to collaborate with Danes. She described the show as a deeply personal narrative that tackles significant life questions. “I’m thrilled to get to tell this story with the genius Claire Danes,” Treem stated. She emphasized that the project encompasses themes such as love, science, faith, and aging, labeling it a meaningful opportunity.
Danes is also serving as an executive producer for the series, alongside Avi Nir, Keren Shahar, and Peter Traugott. The production is a collaboration between Universal Television and Keshet Studios.
This new role continues Danes’ relationship with Netflix, as she recently starred in the psychological thriller series ‘The Beast in Me,’ which debuted in November and featured Matthew Rhys, Brittany Snow, and Natalie Morales.
Danes boasts a lengthy and successful career in both television and film. She first gained prominence in the 1990s with ‘My So-Called Life,’ where she played Angela Chase. She became widely recognized for her Emmy-winning portrayal of Carrie Mathison in the series ‘Homeland.’
Her film credits include notable titles such as ‘Romeo + Juliet,’ ‘The Hours,’ ‘Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,’ and ‘Stardust.’ Additionally, she has participated in theater productions both on Broadway and off-Broadway.
More details about ‘Lovesick’ are anticipated as production progresses.
This project seems like a perfect match for Claire Danes, given her tendency to take on emotional and intricate roles. The combination of romance and serious life themes could result in a powerful series if executed well. What are your thoughts on Claire Danes leading this new Netflix show?
