Mark Grayson’s Endgame Romance In ‘Invincible’ Is Cemented By The Comics
As the Prime Video series delves deeper into the Viltrumite conflict, fans are repeatedly asking one crucial question: Who does Mark Grayson ultimately end up with, and will the show remain true to Robert Kirkman’s original vision?
The comic series concluded after 144 issues, providing its protagonist with a definitive romantic resolution that is rare in mainstream superhero narratives. Creator Robert Kirkman made a deliberate choice to give ‘Invincible’ a proper, finite conclusion, intentionally diverging from the genre’s tendency for endless reboots. This conclusion revolves around a relationship that audiences have been supporting since the very first issue.
Before Mark’s heart finds its true home, both the comic and the show introduce him to a significant high school girlfriend, Amber Bennett. Amber and Mark’s relationship lasts through senior year and into college, despite their differing school schedules. However, the strain of Mark’s secret life leads to their eventual downfall long before any superpowered rival enters the picture.
The animated adaptation reimagines Amber significantly. Voiced by Zazie Beetz, this version of Amber is transformed from her blonde Caucasian comic counterpart into an African American social justice advocate, who even figures out Mark’s secret identity before he reveals it. By season two, following the encounter with Anissa, Amber decides to end her relationship with Mark, citing their vastly different worlds.

Amber’s chapter is significant as it delays the inevitable connection between Mark and Eve. Eve has always been a constant presence in Mark’s life as a friend, confidante, and fellow hero, and the show wisely allows their relationship to develop naturally rather than rushing it. Even Amber notices the chemistry between them before Mark does.
The slow burn ultimately pays off, as Eve has been the right choice all along. Mark and Eve first crossed paths in ‘Invincible’ #2 while battling the Mauler Twins, with Eve already a member of Robot’s Teen Team and dating Rex Splode. Their friendship deepened as they navigated the challenges of being teenage superheroes.
Mark and Eve shared their first kiss in ‘Invincible’ #38 and officially began dating in issue 50, embarking on superhero dates across France, Egypt, Italy, and even space. Their journey is complicated, including Mark fathering an illegitimate son, Markus Murphy, after a traumatic encounter with the Viltrumite Anissa, a storyline the show is expected to handle with the same seriousness.
The Prime Video adaptation streamlines this narrative. In season three, episode two, titled ‘A Deal With the Devil’, Mark and Eve’s relationship is solidified, highlighted by the memorable line, ‘So are we dating or what’. In the comics, their early dynamic is messier, with a kiss occurring while Mark is still with Amber, but the show presents it as a more organic slow burn.
Eve’s role extends beyond just being Mark’s girlfriend. Following Thragg’s return with his child army in ‘Invincible’ #131, Mark and Eve affirm their love and marry in issue 133 before confronting him. They welcome a daughter named Terra, and during the conflict, Thragg brutally kills both Mark and Eve, forcing Terra to witness their deaths before Eve resurrects them.
The storyline takes an operatic turn as Mark eventually becomes the Emperor of the Viltrum Empire, with Eve by his side as Empress Consort. Mark strives to instill a sense of responsibility in the next generation of Viltrumites, ruling for centuries as a peacekeeper alongside Eve, Terra, and his stepson Marky, who grows up to become Kid Invincible.
The final twist in their love story is what sets it apart from typical comic narratives. After a time skip, Eve appears to die of old age, only to discover that her powers allow her body to regenerate, revealing her immortality. The concluding scene takes place 500 years after Mark’s transformation into Invincible, with him reflecting on his father’s poignant question about longevity and smiling at his answer.
The animated series still has a considerable journey ahead before reaching this point. The fourth season is set to premiere in March 2026, and Amazon has already renewed the series for a fifth season in July 2025. Kirkman has estimated that fully telling Mark’s story will require around seven to nine seasons.
The encouraging news for fans is that the show has demonstrated a commitment to honoring the source material while enhancing the narrative. The series closely follows the comic’s storyline, incorporating new subplots and minor adjustments, but the core tale of Mark Grayson and the Viltrum Empire remains intact. This suggests that the eventual marriage, the birth of Terra, the existence of Marky, and Mark’s ascension to the throne are likely to be faithfully depicted on screen.
The most poetic aspect is that all of this was hinted at in the very first issue. Eve has always been the friend who understood the real Mark, the confidante who supported him, and the partner whose immortality ultimately addresses Nolan Grayson’s harsh question about solitude. Mark Grayson ends up with Atom Eve, and their happily ever after is designed to outlast everyone else who ever loved them.
