HBO Max Announces ‘Song of the Samurai’ Premiere Date — Coming May 9
A new historical action series is set to debut on HBO Max, potentially filling the void left by the recent surge of samurai-themed hits.
Titled ‘Song of the Samurai’, the show is scheduled to premiere on May 9, as reported by Warner Bros. Discovery. This series is based on the popular Japanese manga ‘Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem’, which enjoyed a successful run for over a decade, amassing a dedicated fanbase and selling millions of copies.
Set in Kyoto towards the end of the Edo period, the story unfolds during a time of significant political upheaval in Japan.
It centers on the Shinsengumi, a group of samurai entrusted with safeguarding the ruling government. The narrative follows Toshizo Hijikata, who transitions from a street fighter to a vital member of the samurai force. As he integrates into the group, he develops close relationships with notable figures like Isami Kondo and Soji Okita, all while navigating violent confrontations and shifting allegiances.

The series aims to blend authentic historical events with compelling storytelling and grand action sequences. With the original manga already concluded, the creators have a complete narrative to adapt, allowing for a faithful retelling without the need for unnecessary extensions or improvisation.
Masaaki Sakai is responsible for the script, while Kazutaka Watanabe directs the project. The production involves several companies, including Tokyo Broadcasting System, U-NEXT, and THE SEVEN, a studio recognized for works like ‘Alice in Borderland’.
The cast features Yuki Yamada, Ayano Go, and Kento Nakajima, bringing well-known talent to the series.
Given the rising popularity of samurai dramas, particularly following the success of ‘Shōgun’, expectations are high for this new offering. If it successfully combines action with engaging storytelling, ‘Song of the Samurai’ could emerge as the next major hit in the genre.
