Christopher Nolan has always been known for working with outstanding talent, and his recent comments about Tom Holland indicate that he may have found a new long-term collaborator. With ‘The Odyssey’ set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, the promotional efforts are ramping up, and the discussions surrounding the film are proving to be as intriguing as the movie itself.

‘The Odyssey’ is an upcoming epic fantasy action film that Nolan has both written and directed, adapting Homer’s ancient Greek poem. Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, while Holland plays Telemachus, Odysseus’s son and the prince of Ithaca, who is on a quest to find his father. The ensemble cast also features Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o, among many others. Notably, the film will be the first narrative feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras.

As Nolan makes the rounds for press ahead of the release, he shared his most candid thoughts about Holland during a recent appearance on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’.

Nolan confessed that he might have been one of the last filmmakers in Hollywood to fully appreciate Holland’s acting abilities. However, after working together, he expressed a strong desire to collaborate with him again. “He’s amazing,” Nolan told Colbert. “I’ve not worked with him before, but I would love to work with him again. I mean, he’s just an incredible talent. He’s so, so great.”

The admiration seems mutual, as Holland has previously referred to ‘The Odyssey’ as “the job of a lifetime.” He mentioned that he approached the set every day with a sense of purpose and a point to prove, expressing deep gratitude to Nolan for the opportunity. In another interview with GQ, Holland went even further, calling the film “an absolute masterpiece” and describing it as “unlike anything” he has ever seen.

During the Colbert interview, the conversation also touched on the broader mythology surrounding the project. When Colbert noted that Holland, Hathaway, and co-star Robert Pattinson have all been part of major superhero franchises, Nolan drew a connection between Homer’s epics and modern comic book culture. He suggested that much of what drives Marvel and DC can be traced back to those ancient stories. “The thing about Homer, it is the Marvel of its day,” Nolan stated during the interview with Variety. “It’s very directly this desire for us to feel or believe gods could walk amongst us.”

Nolan and Holland’s last collaboration, ‘Oppenheimer,’ grossed nearly 959 million dollars worldwide and received 13 Academy Award nominations, winning seven Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. With such a remarkable legacy and a glowing mutual endorsement between director and star making headlines, ‘The Odyssey’ is poised to become one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the summer 2026 season.

The possibility of a collaboration between Nolan and Holland that goes beyond ‘The Odyssey’ is an exciting prospect for fans of both the director and the actor. Share your thoughts in the comments about whether you would like to see the two team up again for a future project.
