The unexpected death of Monica in ‘The Rookie’ Season 8 caught many viewers off guard, but showrunner Alexi Hawley assures that it was a decision that felt organic to the narrative.

Hawley explained that Monica’s storyline had reached its natural conclusion. Having survived numerous perilous situations, he felt that keeping her in similar predicaments wouldn’t contribute anything fresh to the plot. Instead, he believed the character deserved a poignant and meaningful exit rather than a cycle of repetitive conflicts.

Before her demise, Monica shared a heartfelt moment with her ex-husband Wesley, portrayed by Shawn Ashmore. Hawley noted that this scene was among the strongest of the season, praising the powerful performances delivered by the actors. Throughout the season, the aim was to add depth to Monica’s character, moving beyond the portrayal of a mere villain.

The showrunner emphasized that Monica’s final moments were crafted to feel complete, and there are no plans to revisit her story through flashbacks. He clarified that her character arc is considered finished within the series.

Actress Bridget Regan, who brought Monica to life, expressed that she was not surprised by the character’s death. Instead, she felt that the role had already explored all possible avenues for the character. Regan humorously remarked that Monica had survived so many extreme scenarios that she was far beyond having a typical “last chance” in the storyline.

At the same time, Regan stated that what truly surprised her was not the death itself, but the emotional impact it carried. She felt a sense of sadness for the character, noting that Monica never truly changed or escaped the darker path she was on. In her perspective, there existed a version of Monica that could have evolved into something better, but the character never reached that potential.

Monica’s exit concludes a long-standing storyline in the series and represents one of the more emotional developments of the season.

This type of ending resonates when a character has endured significant challenges, and the story requires closure. However, it can be difficult for viewers who were hoping for redemption rather than a final downfall. What are your thoughts on Monica’s ending in the show? Share your opinions in the comments.
