In today’s film industry, box office longevity is becoming increasingly rare, with many blockbusters experiencing significant drop-offs after their opening weekend. While numerous films can boast a strong debut, few manage to keep audiences returning consistently for weeks, let alone months, post-release.

Christopher Nolan’s latest masterpiece has defied this trend in spectacular fashion. Since its debut on July 17, where it opened with a remarkable $123.5 million domestically, ‘The Odyssey’ has steadily climbed through Nolan’s filmography, surpassing both ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ to become his highest-grossing film ever.

This momentum has translated into an extraordinary endurance record. The film earned an additional $1.1 million at the domestic box office on Tuesday, extending its streak of consecutive days above the $1 million mark to 61. This means ‘The Odyssey’ has now gone two full months without a single day falling below that threshold.

This achievement places ‘The Odyssey’ in truly rare company. The 61-day streak ties it with 1999’s ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’ for the fifth-longest run of consecutive $1 million days recorded domestically. If the film continues this trend, it could break into the top four, trailing only a few of the biggest box office hits of all time, including ‘Avatar.’

Along the way, ‘The Odyssey’ has surpassed ‘Finding Nemo’s’ 59-day streak to claim the sixth-longest run overall and holds the record for any R-rated release, having eclipsed ‘Obsession’s’ previous mark of 55 consecutive days. It also surpassed ‘Barbie’s’ 46-day streak earlier in its run, becoming the sixth-longest such streak recorded at the domestic box office since the pandemic began.

The Matt Damon-led adaptation of Homer’s epic poem has heavily relied on IMAX support from the outset, becoming only the second film in IMAX history to surpass $100 million in that format within just 10 days, following ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ This strength in the IMAX format appears to be paying off, as the film is currently outperforming even ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in domestic daily grosses, maintaining its position as the number two film at the box office behind the record-breaking Sony release.

On its most recent Tuesday discount day, ‘The Odyssey’ collected $1.1 million, marking the fifth-biggest ninth Tuesday performance ever recorded and reflecting a mere 31.2 percent drop from the previous week—a remarkably soft decline for a film nine weeks into its run. This consistency has pushed the film’s total domestic gross to $602.9 million.

With Nolan’s filmography collectively surpassing $7 billion worldwide, ‘The Odyssey’ has solidified its status as a significant entry in that catalog. Projections had previously estimated the film’s final domestic total to be between $615 million and $630 million, but its ongoing daily consistency suggests that this range could increase even further before its theatrical run concludes.

Whether it can maintain enough momentum to break into the top four all-time streaks remains to be seen, but the fact that it is even in that conversation speaks volumes about the kind of run this has been. For a nearly three-hour, R-rated epic to still be generating over $1 million daily two months after its release is virtually unheard of in today’s box office landscape.

Regardless of what the final domestic figure turns out to be, ‘The Odyssey’ has already established itself as one of the most resilient box office performances of the year, R-rated or otherwise. The film crossed the $1 billion global mark in just three weeks and continues to prove that Nolan’s reputation as a filmmaker whose works are meant to be experienced in theaters still holds immense sway with audiences.
