‘Black Panther’ Star Michael B. Jordan Discusses His Major Career Break in 2027
Michael B. Jordan has been on a relentless journey over the past two years, transitioning from one film set to another with hardly a moment to breathe. Following a career-defining Oscar campaign and a busy lineup of upcoming projects, the actor has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most dedicated stars.
However, this nonstop pace has taken its toll, a fact that many fans were unaware of until now. In the October 2026 issue of Vogue, Jordan opens up about the demanding nature of the past year behind the scenes.
He revealed plans to step back from acting for most of 2027, sharing with the magazine that he intends to take the entire year off once his current projects conclude. Jordan emphasized that this time away will allow him to reflect on his achievements, admitting he has been in constant motion without the opportunity to truly process his experiences.
His decision to take a break stems from the aftermath of his historic Oscar win. Jordan won Best Actor at the Academy Awards in March for his dual role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack in ‘Sinners,’ triumphing over notable contenders like Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio.
The victory, however, came at a cost. He fell ill the day after the ceremony, spending four days recovering with an IV drip while friends celebrated nearby. Jordan described this as his body finally reaching its breaking point after a grueling awards season, likening it to crossing a finish line only to have his body shut down.
Despite his plans for a break, Jordan is still busy. He is currently directing, producing, and starring in a new adaptation of ‘The Thomas Crown Affair,’ set to release in theaters on March 5, 2027. Additionally, he is involved in a reboot of ‘Miami Vice’ alongside Austin Butler and is producing the ‘Creed’ spin-off series ‘Delphi.’
Once the promotional activities for ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ conclude in the spring, Jordan plans to fully embrace his break. He has even humorously suggested the possibility of stepping away from acting entirely to focus on anime projects, a notion Vogue noted he seemed only partly serious about given his early involvement in that realm.
This isn’t the first time Jordan has expressed a desire to slow down. In a previous GQ interview, he mentioned wanting to reach a point where he could take a year off without his life drastically changing, indicating that he has been contemplating this for about a decade.
The specificity of his 2027 plans is noteworthy. ‘Sinners’ marked Jordan’s fifth collaboration with director Ryan Coogler, following ‘Fruitvale Station,’ ‘Creed,’ and two ‘Black Panther’ films. The film achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, grossing $369 million globally and earning a record 16 Oscar nominations.
While Vogue kept details about Jordan’s personal life somewhat ambiguous, speculation about his romantic interests, including recent sightings with singer Raye, was not directly addressed. For now, Jordan’s professional trajectory is clear: one more major release, followed by a genuine step back to determine his next steps, whether that involves returning to acting, diving into anime, or exploring other avenues entirely.
