Colin Farrell’s celebrated journey into Gotham’s criminal underworld captured the attention of audiences and critics alike when ‘The Penguin’ debuted on HBO in September 2024. The series, crafted by Lauren LeFranc, chronicles Oz Cobb’s ascent to power in Gotham City’s crime scene and serves as a spin-off from Matt Reeves’ 2022 film ‘The Batman.’ What started as a limited series quickly evolved into one of the most talked-about prestige dramas on television, igniting discussions about its future long before the final episode aired.

The show garnered 24 Emmy nominations, making it the second most-nominated program of the year, just behind Apple TV+’s ‘Severance.’ This level of acclaim fueled industry speculation, with fans and insiders alike curious if HBO would find a way to bring Oz Cobb back for another chapter in Gotham’s underworld. The buzz intensified as key creatives began to hint that the story was far from over.

Now, the most definitive sign has emerged. According to @TheBatmanSagaNW, Season 2 of ‘The Penguin’ has been listed on the Writers Guild of America website, a reliable indicator of active development since only writers, productions, or the WGA itself can add or modify listings there.

The WGA listing indicates that ‘The Penguin Season 2’ is slated for 2025 through 2026, with Lauren LeFranc confirmed to return as showrunner, a position she held throughout the first season, which earned her a WGA Award for Best Limited Series.

An exciting addition to the creative team is Semi Chellas, who joined ‘Mad Men’ in its fifth season and co-wrote several Emmy-nominated episodes with creator Matthew Weiner. Chellas will serve as consulting producer for the new season. With six Emmy nominations and a Writers Guild Award shared with Weiner during her tenure on the acclaimed AMC drama, her experience brings a pedigree rooted in the rich, character-driven storytelling that made ‘The Penguin’ such a captivating watch.

LeFranc’s dedication to the project appears stronger than ever following recent developments at HBO. Variety reported that LeFranc signed a two-year overall deal with HBO and HBO Max, also launching her own production company, Acid and Tender Productions, which she describes as a haven for writers and filmmakers aiming to tell authentic, off-kilter, character-driven stories.

She has previously stated that any continuation would only proceed if she and star Colin Farrell felt confident they could surpass the first season’s excellence.

The journey to a second season has been a long and carefully orchestrated one. Executive producer Dylan Clark mentioned at the Golden Globes red carpet that quiet discussions about a second season were in progress, and if the team could devise a compelling idea, HBO boss Casey Bloys and the HBO team would likely want to pursue it. HBO’s confidence in the property was never really in question, and the WGA listing now indicates those conversations have advanced beyond mere speculation.

With LeFranc leading the charge, Chellas contributing her storytelling expertise, and the momentum of the first season’s success behind them, anticipation is already building for what Gotham’s most dangerous crime boss will do next.
