Zendaya is sharing insights into her role selection process, offering a glimpse into how she has crafted a diverse and prominent career.

In a recent interview with Vogue Brazil, Zendaya revealed that she is attracted to characters that are both layered and challenging. She seeks roles that stimulate her as an actress and spark her curiosity about the narrative from the very first reading.

She stated, “I like complex and interesting characters that challenge me and unfold. When I’m choosing roles, I get a lot of inspiration from the script. For me, it’s not easy to maintain attention for very long; I get distracted very easily when I’m reading. When you read a script that really captures your imagination and attention, when you really enter the world that’s being built and want to know what happens to these characters, that’s when I know I’m kind of on the right track.”

Zendaya also emphasized the importance of how a script resonates with her emotionally and mentally. If it feels thrilling yet slightly intimidating, she interprets that as a positive indicator. She remarked, “It’s important that the work is exciting, but also a little scary—like, a little healthy fear about whether or not I’ll be able to embody the character is always good. It’s a challenge for me to complete.”

Another crucial element in her decision-making is the collaboration with her colleagues. She mentioned that directors significantly influence her project choices, explaining, “And, of course, filmmakers. Working with specific directors motivates me.”

Her recent and upcoming projects clearly reflect this approach. Zendaya has successfully navigated a career that spans major franchises and more character-driven narratives. Her performances in films like Spider-Man and Dune showcase her involvement in blockbuster hits, while projects such as Challengers emphasize her ability to deliver complex and emotionally rich performances.

Recent film updates indicate that Zendaya has a packed schedule ahead, with several significant releases on the horizon, including The Drama, The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Dune: Part Three. She is also continuing her role in the series Euphoria, which remains one of her most acclaimed television performances.

Her reflections shed light on why her filmography appears so diverse. She is not merely opting for prominent roles based on scale or fame, but rather focusing on scripts that captivate her and characters that challenge her skills as an actress.

With an expanding list of collaborations with renowned directors like Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, and Luca Guadagnino, Zendaya’s strategy clearly prioritizes strong storytelling and creative challenges over conforming to a single role type.
