Supriya Ganesh addressed the online reactions to her departure from ‘The Pitt’ during an interview with Variety at the Gold Gala red carpet. This discussion followed the announcement that she would be stepping away from her role as Dr. Samira Mohan after Season 2 of the series, as reported by Variety.

Ganesh noted that the online response was overwhelming, particularly as her name began trending shortly after the news broke. She shared that she decided to distance herself from the reactions to maintain her peace.

She expressed, “I tried to take a step away, because it’s just been so surreal. The day that news broke, I saw my name was trending on Twitter, and I was like, ‘Gotta put the phone down and go outside.’ So, I haven’t really been keeping track of it, to be honest, but I’ve been getting such sweet, lovely messages from people, and I’ve honestly just been surprised at how much people love the character and saw so much of themselves in her, and that’s what I’m going to miss.”

The news of her exit from ‘The Pitt’ was first reported in April, confirming that Ganesh would no longer be a series regular after Season 2. At the same time, the show promoted Ayesha Harris, who portrays Dr. Parker Ellis, to a more significant role as it gears up for Season 3.

Despite her departure from the show, Ganesh hinted that she is not leaving acting behind. She mentioned that there are new projects on the horizon, although she cannot disclose any details yet, stating she has “a couple of things in the pipeline.”

Ganesh also reflected on how viewers connected with her character and her broader writing endeavors, particularly a personal essay she penned for Vulture about gender and queer identity. She expressed that the response to that piece has been both meaningful and unexpected.

She elaborated, “It’s definitely a scary thing to put out there, because it’s such a complex experience and something that’s so personal that I remember when I was writing it, I like, ‘I don’t know if anyone’s going to get this. But that’s okay, because even if one person gets it like, I’m writing for that person.’”

She shared that receiving messages from readers and students who reference her essay in academic discussions has been particularly impactful for her. She stated, “I get DMs from people being like, ‘I’m taking your essay to my queer theory class and discussing it in class tomorrow.’ That’s just so surreal to me, because I remember being in women’s and gender studies classes, and discussing and debating ideas. It’s just great that it’s part of the conversation.”

‘The Pitt’ continues on HBO Max, with Season 2 fully available for streaming. HBO leadership has confirmed that the series has been renewed for a third season, ensuring the story will carry on even after Ganesh’s exit.
