‘Invincible’ creator Robert Kirkman has revealed that the Prime Video animated series will continue to diverge from the original comic book narratives in upcoming seasons.

While the show is rooted in Kirkman’s comic series, he emphasized that the adaptation is not intended to replicate the source material verbatim. Instead, the creative team is focused on developing new stories as the series progresses.

In an interview with The Direct during the promotion of ‘Invincible’ Season 4, which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Kirkman discussed how the writers are incorporating fresh ideas into the show. He mentioned that the team has a wealth of material to draw from and that future episodes will feature more original content that does not directly stem from the comics.

Kirkman stated, “I mean, any lack of new storylines in the television show is not due to a dearth of ideas from the writers. The writers on the show have tons of ideas, and so, yeah, you can expect more side quests and things that will be working their way into the overall narrative of the show as we go on, just because it’s exciting to us and it’s a fun thing to do.”

He also noted that the creative team has been exploring aspects of the ‘Invincible’ universe that were not fully utilized in the comics. This approach allows the show to resonate with fans of the original story while introducing new material unique to the television adaptation.

Co-showrunner Simon Racioppa also discussed this strategy, asserting that any new storyline must feel organic to the series. He clarified that nothing should come across as random or disconnected, and every episode needs to contribute meaningfully to the overarching narrative. Given that each season consists of only eight episodes, the aim is to ensure that every segment advances the main character, Mark Grayson.

Although Kirkman and Racioppa did not disclose specific future plots, they confirmed that more changes and additions are on the horizon. This suggests that fans can anticipate surprises as the series evolves beyond the comic storyline.

With these developments, ‘Invincible’ is progressing further into its own interpretation of the story, blending the original comic with innovative ideas crafted specifically for the animated series.
