Netflix Claims Its Global Impact Boosted Economy by $325 Billion in a Decade
Netflix is showcasing what it terms “The Netflix Effect,” a new concept that illustrates its global influence over the last ten years. The streaming giant asserts that this effect demonstrates how its films and series have impacted not only entertainment but also jobs, economies, and culture worldwide.
Since its significant international expansion in 2016, when it launched in over 130 countries simultaneously, Netflix has evolved into a truly global platform. Currently, the company claims to reach more than 190 countries and territories.
According to data shared by Netflix and reported through its new website thenetflixeffect.com, the company has invested over $135 billion in movies and TV shows during the past decade. It also asserts that these productions have contributed more than $325 billion to the global economy.
Additionally, Netflix states that its productions have generated a significant number of jobs, including over 425,000 direct positions in film and TV production. The company also claims there were more than 700,000 extra and day-worker roles associated with its projects.
In a blog post, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos articulated that the company’s impact extends far beyond entertainment.
“A comprehensive look at the economic, cultural and social impact of our films and series, and how it ripples out across economies, industries and everyday life, day after day, week after week,” Sarandos stated.
Netflix plans to continue increasing its content spending, with expectations to invest around $20 billion in 2026 alone, focusing on new productions, global studios, and training initiatives.
“Now we have a responsibility to keep that flywheel going,” Sarandos noted. He emphasized that while other companies may cut back on spending, Netflix is committed to investing heavily in content and production infrastructure globally.
The company also shared examples of its extensive reach, claiming its productions have been filmed in over 4,500 cities and towns across more than 50 countries. It has collaborated with over 2,000 production companies and licensed content from more than 3,000 partners.
Netflix highlighted specific shows and films to illustrate its impact, stating that Stranger Things generated $1.4 billion for the U.S. economy and supported over 8,000 jobs during its run. Other projects like The Lincoln Lawyer and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F were also noted for their economic contributions in California.
Beyond financial metrics, Netflix emphasizes its cultural influence. The company reports that non-English content now accounts for over one-third of viewing on the platform, a significant increase from less than 10% a decade ago. Its shows are now dubbed and subtitled in numerous languages.
One notable example is how Emily in Paris has inspired travel, with Netflix claiming many viewers expressed a desire to visit France after watching. The company also cited global hits that have sparked interest in language learning and international tourism.
However, it’s important to note that all these claims originate directly from Netflix itself, and the company has not provided independent verification for the complete economic impact figures.
Nonetheless, Netflix is leveraging this data to illustrate how its content transcends streaming, portraying its platform as a significant influence on jobs, culture, and even travel habits worldwide.
