Netflix Dominates R-Rated Action Thrillers Here’s Why
Netflix has steadily established itself as the premier destination for R-rated action blockbusters. A recent report from TheWrap reveals that this achievement is no coincidence. Films like ‘The Rip’, ‘War Machine’, ‘Thrash’, and ‘Apex’ have emerged as major streaming successes in 2026, highlighting a significant demand for adult-oriented thrillers and action films that Hollywood has largely abandoned in theaters.
The report indicates that all four movies became global hits for Netflix this year, each landing in the Top 10 charts across nearly every country where the service is available. Notably, ‘War Machine’ maintained its position in the streamer’s Top 10 for several weeks. Insiders from Netflix, as cited by TheWrap, noted that viewers who enjoyed one of these films often went on to watch the others, demonstrating a clear appetite for this genre.
Netflix executive Ori Marmur shared with TheWrap that the company has made a deliberate choice to focus on original films of this nature while major studios continue to emphasize franchises, remakes, and family-friendly content. “It has been a conscious decision to fill gaps in the marketplace when legacy studios are leaning into reboots and remakes,” Marmur stated.
He further explained that Netflix aims to create films that evoke both nostalgia and freshness. “Our strategy is not strictly R-rated but wholly original films that feel nostalgic to older audiences and fresh to younger audiences,” he added. Marmur pointed out that viewers still have a strong affinity for high-concept action thrillers reminiscent of the films that ruled theaters in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
TheWrap’s report emphasizes that theatrical studios have largely ceased producing these types of films. Nowadays, big box office successes are predominantly superhero movies, animated features, and PG-13 franchises aimed at the broadest audience possible. In contrast, Netflix has been heavily investing in violent thrillers, survival narratives, cop dramas, shark films, and sci-fi action movies tailored for adult viewers.
Producer Lucy Damon also discussed the success of ‘The Rip’, the thriller featuring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, which has become one of Netflix’s standout films this year. She expressed confidence that audiences still crave these types of movies. “These are the kind of movies we grew up watching and love,” Damon remarked. “I actually don’t know why more of them aren’t made.”
‘War Machine’ director Patrick Hughes echoed similar sentiments while discussing his sci-fi action film starring Alan Ritchson. Hughes described the project as a nod to classic action films and commended Netflix for backing the ambitious vision of the movie. Ritchson also expressed gratitude to the streamer for enabling filmmakers to produce large-scale original action films.
The report further revealed that Netflix intervened to rescue ‘Thrash’ after Sony opted not to release the shark thriller in theaters. Producer Kevin Messick explained that Netflix swiftly acquired the film and expedited its post-production to meet the release date, leading to another significant streaming triumph.
Looking ahead, Netflix has more adult-oriented thrillers slated for release later this year, including ‘The Last House’, ‘The Whisper Man’, ‘Animals’, and a new project from Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher linked to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’. According to TheWrap’s report, Netflix is fully committed to its strategy of revitalizing the R-rated blockbuster for streaming audiences worldwide.
