Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver are reuniting seven years after their acclaimed roles in Marriage Story, and Johansson is excited about the collaboration.

The duo previously portrayed a married couple, Nicole and Charlie Barber, in Noah Baumbach’s 2019 Netflix drama Marriage Story, which explored their emotionally charged divorce and custody battle. The film received significant awards recognition and became one of the most discussed relationship dramas of its era.

Now, they are set to appear together in the upcoming crime thriller Paper Tiger, directed by James Gray. This film takes place in late 1980s New York and follows a family whose lives are turned upside down when Gary (played by Driver), the brother of Johansson’s character’s husband, arrives with threats linked to the Russian mafia.

Johansson, 41, shared her thoughts on the reunion during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, stating, “I would’ve loved to have had even more scenework with him, I love working with him,” referring to Driver.

In Paper Tiger, Johansson portrays Hester Pearl, who is married to Irwin Pearl, played by Miles Teller. Their initially stable family life with their two sons quickly becomes chaotic after Driver’s character enters the picture.

Johansson also reflected on her experience working with Teller, highlighting their strong rapport on set. She noted that he exhibited a softer side during filming, even maintaining contact while she was away promoting another project.

The reunion of Johansson and Driver carries significant emotional weight for audiences familiar with Marriage Story, where their characters’ relationship disintegration was depicted with raw intensity. The film garnered widespread acclaim and received multiple awards following its Netflix release in 2019.

Previously, Johansson discussed the challenges of working with Driver, recalling that they spent extensive time filming emotionally charged scenes. “We spent two entire days screaming at each other, brutally screaming and fighting for two full days,” she mentioned in an earlier interview.

Despite the demanding nature of that experience, Johansson has consistently praised her collaboration with Driver, emphasizing the significance of strong acting partners in her artistic process.

Paper Tiger is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16, marking another significant reunion for the two actors as they come together in a distinctly different narrative.
