Logan Paul has responded to the backlash following his $550,000 investment in rare, graded manga from major anime franchises, a decision that has ignited significant debate within the anime community.

The controversy began in April 2026 when Paul shared details of his purchase online, prompting criticism from fans who felt that the hobby was being transformed into a status symbol or a business venture rather than a true passion.

The online response was swift and intense, particularly from fans of One Piece, many of whom questioned his genuine interest in the series. Some criticism even came from fellow creators, including influencer IShowSpeed, who publicly challenged Paul’s knowledge of the franchise.

Initially, Paul embraced the attention, adopting his WWE-style persona and joking that the anime community had welcomed him. However, he later addressed the issue more seriously during an episode of his IMPAULSIVE podcast, where he tackled both the criticism and his role as a collector.

During the podcast, co-host Mike Majlak raised concerns from fans and even quizzed Paul on One Piece, highlighting the friction between casual collectors and devoted fans of the series. Majlak also expressed worries that high-profile purchases could lead to market manipulation or scalping-like behavior, similar to issues seen in other fandoms.

Paul countered the backlash, suggesting that it was being taken too seriously. He stated, “Please don’t take this personally, One Piece community. I actually like you guys, and God bless you. But if you’re upset that I bought a couple mangas, I just don’t know how much I should be concerning myself with that.”

He also defended his right to collect and engage with the franchise in his own manner, arguing that fandoms should not be restricted or controlled by gatekeeping. In his opinion, enjoying a series can encompass collecting, watching adaptations, and participating in discussions, even if someone is new to the material.

At the same time, Paul acknowledged that there is another perspective to consider. He recognized that for many fans, One Piece represents more than mere entertainment and is intricately linked to personal identity and long-term emotional investment.

This situation underscores a growing tension between internet celebrity collectors and established fan communities, particularly when high-value purchases enter spaces typically driven by long-standing passion rather than financial gain.
