The Duffer Brothers Reveal New Details on the ‘Stranger Things’ Live-Action Spin-Off
The Duffer Brothers are finally sharing fresh insights into the future of the ‘Stranger Things’ universe. During a live recording of the Happy Sad Confused podcast in Los Angeles, Matt and Ross Duffer spoke with host Josh Horowitz about what fans can anticipate following the conclusion of the hit Netflix series.
One of the main topics was the highly anticipated live-action spin-off. Fans have speculated for years about the direction the new series could take, but the Duffers clarified that the project will not center on Eleven, Mike, Dustin, or the original Hawkins group.
“It’s very early… but it’s definitely, it’s totally new characters, totally different,” the brothers stated during the interview.
They also dismissed rumors that the spin-off would function like an anthology series akin to ‘Black Mirror’. According to the Duffers, the new project will follow one main group of characters rather than telling separate stories each season.
“It’s not an anthology show. It’s a set group of characters,” they clarified.
The creators also mentioned that they are taking their time with the spin-off because they do not want to rush production merely to extend the franchise. The brothers emphasized that quality is their top priority, as well as Netflix’s.
“We’re being very careful. We don’t want to rush it. We don’t want it to be anything but excellent.”
They further explained, “No one wants to make it just to make it. No one wants to just do it to continue ‘Stranger Things’. Like, it has to be awesome or forget it.”
The interview also touched on fan theories regarding a potential next-generation sequel. After the final season concluded with Holly Wheeler playing with younger kids in a basement, many viewers speculated that the show was hinting at a new version of ‘Stranger Things’ featuring younger characters.
The Duffers clarified that this was never the intention. “That was really about sort of the passing the torch and him remembering back to his childhood and saying goodbye to it. It’s obviously not setting anything up for a sequel.”
They humorously noted that introducing Holly into a new supernatural narrative would inevitably lead back to the same characters.

“If Holly starts to see this weird stuff, she’s gonna call her brother, and then it’s like we’re just making ‘Stranger Things’ again.”
The brothers also revealed that they are currently focused on writing a brand-new original movie for Paramount Pictures. They mentioned that the film has become their main priority at the moment, although they are still developing the ‘Stranger Things’ spin-off concurrently.
According to the Duffers, transitioning to a movie format feels quite different after spending years creating long-form television.
“We’re so used to having this massive canvas… being able to tell a story over eight to ten hours.”
They added, “It’s really fun to kind of reteach our brains how to tell a story in this much more contained period of time.”
Even though the spin-off is still in its early stages, the interview made it clear that the ‘Stranger Things’ universe is far from over. Alongside the new live-action project, Netflix is also moving forward with season two of ‘Stranger Things: Tales from ’85’ and planning a special celebration for the show’s 10th anniversary later this year.
