Director Reinaldo Marcus Green Discusses Karen Page’s Return in ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill’
Jon Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle has reignited interest in The Punisher, and fans are eager for more insights into this latest chapter of his journey. Director Reinaldo Marcus Green shared details during an interview about the making of The Punisher: One Last Kill and the significant return of Karen Page.
Frank Castle is back in the MCU with several projects, having appeared in Daredevil: Born Again. Although he was absent in its second season, Marvel continued his narrative through a new special titled The Punisher: One Last Kill, which is currently streaming on Disney+. Additionally, Jon Bernthal is set to feature in upcoming projects like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, alongside Tom Holland.
A major highlight of the new Punisher special is the return of Karen Page, portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll. Director Reinaldo Marcus Green explained that her return was designed to closely connect with Frank’s emotional journey.
He stated: “Because we use a sort of unreliable narrator, I think it was a great opportunity to bring back some of the characters that fans love in a way that helps us shape his psychological state, and where we find him in this story. Obviously, anyone who knows Karen knows that she is one of the favorites out of all the characters, and I think that there’s clearly some tension between the two, which everyone loves to see on-screen.”
Green emphasized that Karen is not merely a side character in Frank’s narrative; she is deeply intertwined with his emotional landscape. In the special, her presence serves to reflect Frank’s inner thoughts and memories, especially as he grapples with pain and loss.

He added: “It’s so organic, and it’s so real, and the two actually love each other, and you can see that on-screen just from actor to actor how intense they are when they’re together. So that was amazing to be able to utilize her character to help his headspace. I think she represents his wife in that moment, and it’s such a parallel between him and his real wife and what’s happening in his headspace, and just the connection to another human being.”
According to Green, Karen’s role in the story is also linked to Frank’s memories of his late wife. The show employs visual and emotional cues to illustrate how Frank’s past continues to influence him.
He elaborated: “You know, she’s wearing the same sweatshirt as she [his wife] was wearing the night that she was [killed]. So I think all of that is important for the connectivity of Jon’s psychological state in the piece, and having Karen Page come back and do that with us was a lot of fun to see on screen and, hopefully, a lot of fun for the fans as well.”
The director also discussed why only a limited number of characters were included in Frank’s story for this special. He mentioned that maintaining a tight focus was essential due to the short runtime and emotional depth of the narrative. Characters like Curtis Hoyle and Karen Page were selected because they best mirrored Frank’s mindset.
Green noted that other characters, including Matt Murdock, were not part of the hallucination structure in this project. Instead, the story concentrated on a straightforward emotional trajectory, centered on Frank’s internal conflict.
He explained that these creative decisions were made to keep the narrative clear and focused, avoiding overcrowding with too many character appearances.
The interview also underscores how the relationship between Frank and Karen remains a focal point in the Punisher universe. Their shared scenes are often charged with emotion, and Green acknowledged that their dynamic may have been shaped by earlier portrayals of the characters.
With The Punisher: One Last Kill now available for streaming and more appearances planned for Jon Bernthal in upcoming Marvel projects, fans are eagerly anticipating where Frank Castle’s journey will lead next and whether Karen Page will continue to play a role in it.
