A new trailer has unveiled the first look at Sinestro in ‘Lanterns’, featuring Ulrich Thomsen in the role of Thaal Sinestro, a former member of the Green Lantern Corps. In this storyline, Sinestro is known for later establishing the Yellow Lantern Corps, which harnesses fear as a source of power rather than will.

This iteration of Sinestro continues a narrative that fans may recognize from previous DC projects. The character was portrayed by Mark Strong in the 2011 film Green Lantern, where he initially served as a mentor to Hal Jordan before betraying the Corps.

Showrunner Chris Mundy discussed Sinestro’s role in the series with Entertainment Weekly, emphasizing that the show focuses more on character relationships and influences rather than solely on a traditional villain arc. He noted, “Obviously, in the canon, Sinestro’s the big bad. The thing that interests us is this idea [that] Hal was trained by Sinestro, and Hal is training John.”

Mundy further explained that the series explores how training and influence shape characters over time, likening it to a mentorship dynamic. He stated, “In the coaching tree, we’re very interested in what gets passed on, what doesn’t, and how much is human nature. We talked a lot about programming and parenting and training…What did Hal take away from Sinestro that was good or bad? It brings up a lot of interesting worries.”

In ‘Lanterns’, Sinestro’s character is expected to have a direct connection to Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre. The narrative follows these two Green Lanterns as they investigate a peculiar murder in Nebraska, which gradually unfolds into a larger mystery.

Reports indicate that Sinestro might appear throughout the entire season, leading to speculation about his role being more significant than just a supporting villain. Some sources suggest that the series is structured to potentially allow for multiple seasons.

Ulrich Thomsen also shared insights about his role, hinting that his character may continue beyond a single appearance, though no specific details have been confirmed.

The series is part of the new DC Universe initiative led by DC Studios, blending superhero elements with a grounded crime investigation approach. According to the production team, the story will also extend beyond Earth at times, potentially connecting to Sinestro and other cosmic aspects of the Green Lantern lore.

‘Lanterns’ is currently set to premiere on August 14 on HBO. The recently released trailer provides the first substantial glimpse of Sinestro in this new DC Universe, but many details regarding his complete role remain under wraps.
