Eric Kripke Explains Why Former ‘The Boys’ Star Queen Maeve Did Not Return for Season 5
After five seasons, ‘The Boys’ has officially concluded. The Prime Video series wrapped up many of its significant storylines in the finale, while fans received new insights from creator Eric Kripke about scenes and characters that nearly made it into the final season.
One of the most pressing questions from fans was whether Queen Maeve would make a return before the series ended. The character, portrayed by Dominique McElligott, had been absent from the narrative for some time, and many viewers were eager to see her one last time in Season 5.
In an interview with Eric Kripke from Gold Derby, the creator of ‘The Boys’ revealed that he attempted to bring back Queen Maeve for the final season, but it ultimately did not materialize.
Kripke mentioned that he had discussions with actress Dominique McElligott about reprising her role as Maeve in Season 5. He noted that while the conversations were amicable, her schedule and decision to step back from acting posed challenges.
“I would have loved to have had Maeve,” Kripke stated. “I was in conversation with Dom. We still email once in a while. She’s mostly retired from acting, and her schedule didn’t work out.”
He clarified that there was no drama surrounding the decision. “It was all a very friendly, non-controversial thing,” he added.
Kripke shared that he even directly asked McElligott if she would return if they crafted something for her character. According to him, the actress replied that she had distanced herself from acting and was occupied with other pursuits.
“I was like, ‘If we wrote it, would you do it?’ And she’s like, ‘I’m kind of out of it, and I’m busy, and unfortunately I can’t, but send everyone my love.’”
Queen Maeve was a pivotal character in the earlier seasons of the show, leading many fans to hope for her appearance one last time before the series concluded. Ultimately, Season 5 proceeded without her return.
