Starlight’s Transformation: How Erin Moriarty Evolved in ‘The Boys’ Seasons 1–5
The character Annie January, widely recognized as Starlight, has served as one of the emotional pillars of ‘The Boys’ since its debut in 2019. Portrayed by Erin Moriarty, she begins her journey as an optimistic young woman who views superheroes as genuine heroes. Over the course of five seasons, her faith in that ideal gradually diminishes, transforming her into a powerful advocate against the corruption within Vought.
At the series’ outset, Annie is depicted as someone who truly believes in the power of good. Her childhood dream of joining The Seven stems from a desire to help people on a grander scale. However, upon entering that world, she quickly discovers that it starkly contrasts her expectations. Beneath the polished exterior lies a system rife with control, abuse, and manipulation.

In the initial seasons, particularly Seasons 1 and 2, Starlight’s innocence faces relentless challenges. She grapples with humiliation and exploitation within Vought International while striving to maintain her moral compass. Erin Moriarty’s performance during this period illustrates a character awakening to harsh realities. Although Annie yearns to believe in the system, she begins to recognize its profound flaws.

As the narrative progresses into Seasons 3 and 4, Annie’s trajectory shifts dramatically. She abandons her attempts to navigate the system and outright rejects it. Leaving The Seven behind, she sheds the manufactured image created by Vought, including her controlled public persona and costume. Embracing her true identity, she becomes more transparent about her beliefs and values.

At this juncture in ‘The Boys’, Annie evolves into a leader rather than a follower. She plays a pivotal role in establishing a resistance movement known as the “Starlighters,” which expands into a significant force opposing Homelander’s dominance. Transitioning from a corporate symbol to one embraced by the public, she embodies a new kind of heroism.

By Season 5, the tone of her journey takes on a more serious and emotionally charged nature. The ongoing conflict and pressure begin to take their toll on her. Annie finds herself questioning the feasibility of change amid relentless violence and fear. However, a pivotal moment occurs when she reconnects with her father, providing her with renewed perspective and strength.

From this point, she embarks on the concluding chapter of her journey with a more grounded outlook. She no longer subscribes to simplistic notions of heroism or easy solutions. Instead, she acknowledges that the fight for change is often arduous and painful, yet still essential. This iteration of Starlight is wiser, more cautious, and resolutely determined.
Erin Moriarty’s real-life experiences during the final season added depth to this evolution. In interviews, she has shared how her journey on the show mirrored her personal growth. She also revealed facing significant health challenges while filming the last season, including a diagnosis of Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition impacting energy and physical well-being.
During this time, she also faced public scrutiny regarding her appearance while privately managing symptoms such as fatigue and other health issues. Nevertheless, she persevered, completing her work on the series while undergoing treatment.
In her own words, she reflected on self-doubt and growth, stating, “I’ve learned that as long as you’re questioning whether or not you’re doing good, it means you’re a good person.”
Throughout 40 episodes of ‘The Boys’, Erin Moriarty’s portrayal of Starlight has evolved from innocence to leadership. Her character’s journey reflects a transition from faith in an ideal system to the acceptance of a flawed world that still warrants challenge.
By the series’ conclusion, Starlight is no longer merely a hopeful newcomer. She emerges as a symbol of resilience, demonstrating how one can relinquish illusions while still upholding their values in a complex and challenging reality.
