The first teaser for ‘Victorian Psycho’ has dropped, offering a spine-chilling glimpse of Maika Monroe in a dark new role. This horror film is set to premiere at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section on May 21, with early footage already establishing a haunting atmosphere in Victorian England.

As per the film’s synopsis from Deadline, the narrative centers on Winifred Notty, portrayed by Maika Monroe, a young governess who arrives at the isolated gothic manor known as Ensor House in 1858. Initially, she appears calm and charming, but eerie events soon unfold around her. Residents of the house begin to vanish without a trace, and the situation escalates as her demeanor becomes increasingly unstable.

The synopsis reveals Winifred’s gradual descent into chaos, violence, and madness. It hints that her actions grow more brutal as the mystery within the manor deepens. As tension mounts, the story poses a chilling question about how far she will go and who might survive her wrath.

Directed by Zachary Wigon, ‘Victorian Psycho’ is adapted from the novel by Virginia Feito, who also penned the screenplay. The film features a talented cast, including Thomasin McKenzie, Jason Isaacs, Ruth Wilson, and Evie Templeton, among others. Production companies involved include Traffic, Anton, and Anonymous Content, with Anton fully financing the project.

The film has experienced several changes during its production. According to Deadline, Margaret Qualley was initially cast in the lead role but later exited the project, leading to Maika Monroe stepping in. Bleecker Street has secured U.S. distribution rights, while True Brit will handle the release in the U.K. and Ireland.

Monroe’s portrayal of Winifred Notty signifies another venture into psychological horror for the actress, who has gained recognition for her tense and unsettling performances in the genre. In this film, she embodies a character whose polite facade conceals a deeply dangerous nature, all set against the eerie backdrop of a strict Victorian household.

‘Victorian Psycho’ is slated for a theatrical release in the United States on September 25, following its festival run after the Cannes premiere.
