Ryan Condal Criticizes Toxic Fandom Impacting ‘House of the Dragon’ Cast
‘House of the Dragon’ creator Ryan Condal has candidly addressed the backlash and toxic behavior that has emerged from parts of the fandom. He specifically highlighted how some viewers have compared and separated the younger cast members from the adult versions of their characters.
Condal expressed that witnessing this situation was painful, particularly for the actors involved. He described the online reactions as indicative of a broader issue in fan culture, where discussions often become aggressive rather than supportive. He stated, “It’s an unfortunate by-product of the internet rage machine — we have so turned against ourselves in fandom.”
He elaborated that fandom used to be a shared space where individuals could enjoy the same story in various ways. However, he believes it has transformed into a more divided and hostile environment. Condal remarked, “This kind of fandom used to be the happy place to go, where people who liked different things within the same world could just find common ground.”
One of the main issues he pointed out was the negative comparisons made between the younger breakout stars from Season 1 and the adult actors who took over their roles after the time jump in the story. He deemed this behavior harmful and unnecessary, especially since both sets of actors were portraying the same characters at different life stages.
Condal did not shy away from expressing his frustration regarding the situation. He said, “And I thought it was horrible! And it’s horrible for all these young performers that did a great thing, and kind of did an impossible thing. Everybody should have just been celebrating the success and reception of that show. And people should find something else to do with their time, frankly.”
His comments reflect a larger conversation surrounding ‘House of the Dragon’ fandom activity, which intensified after Season 2. The second season faced significant criticism for its slower pacing and storytelling choices. Many viewers anticipated a faster-moving war narrative following the explosive Season 1 finale, but instead, they encountered a season more focused on dialogue, character development, and political tension.

Some fans also reacted strongly to deviations from the original source material. Certain plot changes and character motivations sparked widespread debate online, leading to arguments between viewers familiar with the book and those watching the show without prior knowledge of the story.
Simultaneously, HBO’s marketing campaign encouraged fans to choose sides between “Team Black” and “Team Green,” which boosted engagement but also heightened division within the audience. What began as lighthearted debate escalated into more aggressive online arguments as expectations for Season 2 grew.
By the end of the season, frustration among some viewers increased, particularly regarding what they perceived as a slow buildup to events that had already been delayed. This frustration often spilled over onto social media, where cast members and writers were sometimes directly targeted.
Condal’s remarks underscore how this environment has impacted those involved in the production. While he acknowledged the criticism directed at the show itself, he was more concerned about how that criticism became personal and affected younger actors who were merely performing roles in a complex, large-scale narrative.
Despite the backlash, ‘House of the Dragon’ continues to be one of HBO’s most prominent series, with future seasons expected to delve deeper into the Targaryen civil war story. Condal’s comments suggest that while creative debates are a natural part of a major franchise, he hopes the focus can return to appreciation rather than division.
