A new chapter in the world of ‘The Godfather’ is on the horizon, but it seems unlikely that Francis Ford Coppola will be directing again. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, a new novel linked to the iconic crime saga is set to be released in 2027, potentially paving the way for another film adaptation from Paramount Pictures.

The forthcoming book, titled ‘Connie’, is authored by Adriana Trigiani and has been authorized by the Mario Puzo estate, with a release scheduled for fall 2027. This story will center on Connie Corleone, the only daughter of Vito Corleone, offering a fresh perspective on the classic crime family narrative that hasn’t been deeply explored before.

Sources cited by The Hollywood Reporter indicate that the novel was part of an eight-way publishing auction, highlighting the significant interest in expanding the universe created by Mario Puzo. The book will be published by Random House.

What makes this project particularly significant for Hollywood is that Paramount now holds the film rights, stemming from a long-standing legal arrangement tied to Puzo’s original 1969 novel. When Paramount acquired the rights, it secured control over future adaptations related to the franchise.

After Puzo’s passing in 1999, disputes over subsequent books led to legal battles, which ultimately concluded in a settlement. This arrangement allows the Puzo estate to continue publishing new novels while granting Paramount the first opportunity to adapt them into films.

This system positions ‘Connie’ as a potential new movie. However, one major figure is unlikely to participate in that endeavor.

A representative for Francis Ford Coppola informed The Hollywood Reporter that it is “unlikely” the 87-year-old director will return to helm another installment in the franchise. While fans may have hoped for his return, his involvement now appears very uncertain.

Coppola directed the original ‘The Godfather’ trilogy, which is widely regarded as one of the most influential film series in cinematic history. The first film, released in 1972, helped define modern crime storytelling on screen, while its sequels, released in 1974 and 1990, expanded the Corleone family saga and solidified Coppola’s legacy as a filmmaker.

Despite the strong interest in the franchise, particularly with a new female-led perspective in ‘Connie’, the chances of Coppola returning are slim. The report also notes that he is currently focused on other projects, including a film titled ‘Glimpses of the Moon’.

Nevertheless, the combination of a new book, a significant publishing deal, and Paramount’s film rights indicates that ‘The Godfather’ universe is far from over. Whether or not Coppola is involved, Hollywood seems poised to revisit the Corleone family once again, this time through a different lens.
