‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Wins Over Audiences Despite Divided Critics and CinemaScore Revealed
Star Wars has made its triumphant return to the big screen, and while critics remain divided on ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’, audience reactions are decidedly more positive. Audience tracking and Rotten Tomatoes scores released after the opening weekend indicate that fans are responding much more favorably than early reviews suggested.
The film received an A- CinemaScore from audiences on opening day, a strong result for a PG-13 blockbuster. This score aligns the film with several previous Star Wars entries, including ‘The Phantom Menace’, ‘Attack of the Clones’, ‘Revenge of the Sith’, and ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’, all of which earned the same grade from moviegoers.
However, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ did not quite achieve the top-tier audience scores of the original trilogy films ‘A New Hope’, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, and ‘Return of the Jedi’, which all received A+ ratings. It also fell slightly short of ‘The Force Awakens’, ‘Rogue One’, and ‘The Last Jedi’, each of which earned an A CinemaScore.

Interestingly, the new film performed better with audiences than ‘The Rise of Skywalker’, which received a B+ rating upon its release in 2019. Fans have noted this as a significant improvement for the franchise after years of debate surrounding the sequel trilogy.
Another comparison being made by fans is to the animated film ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’, which received a much lower B- CinemaScore during its theatrical release in 2008.
Rotten Tomatoes also reveals a stark contrast between critics and audiences. The film currently holds a 63% rating on the Tomatometer based on over 200 critic reviews, while the audience Popcornmeter score is significantly higher at 89% from more than 2,500 verified ratings.

Many critics have praised Ludwig Göransson’s musical score and Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of Din Djarin. However, reviews regarding the story, visuals, and action sequences have been more mixed. Despite this, general audiences seem to resonate with the emotional connection between Mando and Grogu, which has been the heart of the franchise since the Disney+ series debuted in 2019.
Directed by Jon Favreau, the film continues the narrative after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Din Djarin and Grogu are enlisted by the New Republic for a perilous mission involving Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White. The cast also features Sigourney Weaver, Jonny Coyne, and a surprising cameo from Martin Scorsese.
The film has had a lengthy journey to theaters. Lucasfilm initially intended to continue the story with a fourth season of ‘The Mandalorian’, but plans shifted after the 2023 Hollywood strikes delayed production. During this time, the studio reportedly opted to focus on a theatrical release instead of another season.
‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ officially premiered in Los Angeles on May 14, with a worldwide release following on May 22. This marks the first Star Wars film to grace theaters in seven years.
Despite the mixed reviews from critics, audience reactions indicate that Star Wars fans are simply thrilled to experience the galaxy far, far away on the big screen once more. Across social media, many viewers have echoed a familiar sentiment after leaving theaters: “This is the way.”
