Anne Hathaway has candidly addressed the ongoing online speculation regarding her appearance, including rumors about cosmetic surgery.

These comments were made during an interview with Elle, published on Thursday. The conversation arose after fans began comparing her recent public appearances to her earlier work, particularly her role in The Devil Wears Prada, leading to questions about how she has maintained such a youthful look over nearly two decades.

Hathaway was just 23 when The Devil Wears Prada debuted in 2006. Now at 43, recent footage from the anticipated sequel has reignited discussions about whether she has undergone cosmetic procedures. The speculation became so prevalent that it prompted her to address it directly in her interview.

In her conversation with Elle, Hathaway responded to the rumors straightforwardly, even acknowledging that she might consider cosmetic procedures in the future. She remarked, “And by the way, the other thing about all this is, I might still get a facelift someday.” This comment was notable as she neither confirmed nor denied any past procedures but rather spoke openly about potential future choices.

The actress also reflected on how the internet has reacted to her appearance in recent years. She suggested that much of the speculation stems from assumptions rather than facts, especially in an age where social media users meticulously analyze celebrity images. She noted that while she would prefer more privacy, the constant discussion about her looks has made it challenging to remain silent.

Hathaway stated, “We’re at a time when people feel very confident in assuming what they think is fact, and sometimes what they think is accurate and sometimes it’s not.” She added that the volume of speculation eventually compelled her to respond directly instead of ignoring it.

She also highlighted a behind-the-scenes video from the 2026 Academy Awards that many fans misinterpreted as evidence of cosmetic work. In the clip, she explained that part of her red carpet look was achieved through a simple hairstyling trick rather than surgery or digital alteration. She demonstrated how two tight braids were concealed under her hair and tied together to create a temporary lifting effect on her face.

Explaining the technique, she said, “And you look a little bit more awake. That’s the trick,” while crediting her hairstylist Orlando Pita for the idea. This moment was widely shared online, further fueling the ongoing discussion about her appearance.

Hathaway also discussed the broader pressures faced by actors, especially women, to conform to certain beauty standards as they age in Hollywood. In previous interviews, including a 2023 appearance on Today, she dismissed the notion of focusing on “aging gracefully,” stating that she tries not to think about age at all.

Simultaneously, she has shared lifestyle changes she has made over the years. She mentioned that she stopped drinking alcohol in her thirties and became more dedicated to skincare and health. She also highlighted habits such as regularly applying sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure.

Reflecting on her younger years, Hathaway noted that the pressure she felt was different at the beginning of her career. She explained, “One of the things about younger me is she was really scared. And I think that fear made me harsh with myself.”

According to Elle, Hathaway now feels more at ease addressing public speculation than she did earlier in her life, even if she would prefer less emphasis on her appearance overall.
