Few CBS dramas have garnered such a dedicated Sunday-night audience as ‘Tracker’, the rewardist procedural featuring Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw, a solitary survivalist who traverses the nation solving mysteries for a fee. The series has consistently attracted impressive viewership in its third season, averaging around 8.08 million viewers, solidifying its status as one of the network’s most-watched dramas. This loyal fanbase is drawn to the characters as much as the intriguing cases, which makes the Season 3 finale resonate deeply.

The finale, titled “The Best Ones,” is the concluding segment of a two-part narrative where Colter and his brother Russell, portrayed by Jensen Ackles, strive to unveil the full truth behind a secretive DARPA-funded initiative known as Chrono Stasis. This covert government program exploited gifted children for military operations. Their late father, Ashton Shaw, attempted to expose this operation before his demise, and this season has gradually pieced together that darker narrative.

In the finale, Colter and Russell rush to save Danny, a gifted boy being held as a test subject, along with his friend Lola, a precognitive teenager confined in a separate punishment facility called the Quiet Place. With the assistance of Dr. Serena Jukic, Danny uses a remote viewing session to help Colter pinpoint the location of Lola. Meanwhile, Russell follows a lead of his own, only to fall into an ambush set by McIntyre’s men, who kill his informant and injure Russell before he can escape.

Although Russell survives his injury, he conceals it from Colter, and the brothers ultimately succeed in rescuing both children. Colter arranges for Lola, Danny, and Dr. Jukic to vanish into the underground Night Movers network managed by his old contact Barbie, providing the survivors with new lives off the grid. It seems like a tidy resolution, the kind that allows everyone to breathe easy. However, ‘Tracker’ is not a series that lets its characters relax for long.

The twist comes when Russell confronts McIntyre directly. Instead of eliminating him, Russell receives a file containing shocking information about something their father Ashton did to Colter during his childhood, a revelation that visibly disturbs him. McIntyre proposes a deal to Russell: complete one final job, and the file remains hidden. Before leaving town, Russell calls Reenie, asking her to keep Colter from pursuing him, promising to explain everything when he can. Colter, believing he has finally closed this chapter, remains unaware of the unfolding events.

Star and executive producer Hartley previously hinted in an interview with Deadline that the finale provides Colter with crucial information about his father while simultaneously raising unresolved questions. “I don’t know if it’s a complete resolve,” he stated, “but it’s information that he needed in order for him to move on with his life and go about his business and put that to bed, or at least be at peace with the details.” Ironically, while Colter believes he has found peace, his brother holds a file that could shatter that tranquility.

‘Tracker’ has already been renewed for a fourth season as part of the CBS 2026-2027 lineup, which will see a significant change as production moves from Vancouver to Los Angeles. Hartley, who also serves as executive producer, expressed his pride in what was accomplished in Vancouver while also sharing his excitement about bringing ‘Tracker’ to L.A. With Russell now operating in the shadows and a troubling secret about Colter’s past in the wrong hands, Season 4 is set to explore emotional landmines that fans will eagerly speculate about.

What do you think Ashton Shaw did to Colter, and how will the brothers confront this truth when it finally emerges?
