Will Doc Ock Return? ‘Spider-Man’s’ Alfred Molina Discusses Future in the MCU
Alfred Molina has shared insights about his future in the Marvel universe and his legendary role as Doctor Octopus. In a recent interview while promoting his Netflix series ‘The Boroughs,’ the actor reflected on his past experiences in the Spider-Man films and the possibility of returning to the MCU.
Molina first portrayed Otto Octavius, also known as Doc Ock, in Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 2’ back in 2004. Years later, he reprised the role in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021), where various versions of Spider-Man villains from different universes came together.
When asked about the chance of playing Doc Ock again in upcoming Spider-Man projects, Molina remained optimistic. He expressed his enjoyment of the character and openness to returning if the opportunity arises.
He stated, “Who knows? If they came knocking on my door and said we’d love you to do it again, I would do it again, no doubt. I doubt if it’ll happen, though.”
While he sounded realistic about the likelihood, his response indicates a strong interest in reprising the role if Marvel and Sony decide to bring Doctor Octopus back into the narrative.
Molina also reminisced about how unexpected his return in ‘No Way Home’ was, especially after being away from the role for so long. He mentioned that when he filmed Doc Ock’s sacrifice in ‘Spider-Man 2,’ he believed his journey with the character had concluded. At that point, he thought the story was complete and that Otto’s death had closed the chapter.
However, as he explained, Marvel’s storytelling approach is rarely straightforward. He recalled being informed early on that characters don’t always stay gone for good in this universe, which proved true when he was brought back nearly two decades later.
His return in ‘No Way Home’ utilized modern visual effects to de-age him and recreate the classic look of Doc Ock. Molina expressed surprise at how much technology could alter his appearance, but he enjoyed stepping back into the role for fans who grew up with the original films.
While promoting ‘The Boroughs,’ Molina also humorously noted how his career keeps him engaged across various roles, from live-action drama to voice acting. Nevertheless, his connection to Doc Ock remains one of his most celebrated performances.
Although he isn’t anticipating a call anytime soon, Molina’s remarks indicate that he has no personal reservations about returning. If Marvel chooses to revisit Doctor Octopus in future Spider-Man stories, he is ready to step back into the role.
Currently, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ the next MCU Spider-Man film featuring Tom Holland, is progressing without any confirmed appearance from Molina’s version of the character. However, fans continue to speculate about the potential return of classic villains like Doc Ock in some capacity.
Based on Molina’s own words, if that moment arises, he would be ready to return to the role without hesitation.
