‘House of the Dragon’ Showrunner Ryan Condal Confirms Series Will End After Four Seasons
‘House of the Dragon’ is approaching its concluding chapter, and fans now have a better understanding of how long the story will persist. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed that the series is set to conclude after four seasons.
This revelation came during an interview where Condal discussed the long-term vision for the show. He noted that while HBO has not made a formal announcement regarding the exact ending, his creative plan is already in place. He stated, “I can’t speak for everybody else involved with the show and HBO and all that, but, yes, that is very much my plan.” This indicates his intention to wrap up the narrative with season 4.
‘House of the Dragon’ serves as a prequel to ‘Game of Thrones’ and is based on George R.R. Martin’s book ‘Fire & Blood’. The series chronicles the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which lies at the heart of the show and has been gradually developing over the seasons.
Condal explained that the narrative is crafted to reach its conclusion through this civil war. The upcoming seasons will heavily focus on the final, most devastating phase of the conflict. Season 3 and season 4 are anticipated to depict the downfall of the Targaryen family’s internal strife and its ensuing repercussions.
The show has emerged as one of HBO’s major successes in recent years, continuing the legacy of ‘Game of Thrones’ and expanding the universe created by George R.R. Martin. Despite a strong collaborative effort between Martin and the production team in earlier seasons, recent reports suggest that their relationship has become more complex in later installments.
Martin has openly voiced concerns regarding changes made in the adaptation. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he remarked, “I hired Ryan, I thought Ryan and I were partners. And we were all through the first season. I would read early drafts of the scripts. I would give notes. He would change some things. It was working really well — I thought.”
He also elaborated on how their collaboration evolved, adding, “Then we got into season two, and he basically stopped listening to me.” These comments highlight a disagreement about how closely the show should adhere to the source material.

Despite these tensions, Condal has remained committed to steering the series forward. He has previously stated that adapting the story for television necessitates changes due to production constraints and narrative structure. He has also expressed a desire to focus on completing the story for the cast and crew.
While HBO has not officially confirmed that season 4 will be the final season, Condal’s remarks strongly imply that the creative roadmap is already established. If this plan remains unchanged, season 3 and season 4 will bring the Dance of the Dragons to its climax.
Season 3 of ‘House of the Dragon’ is scheduled to release on June 21. It will continue to build towards the final stages of the war, where key characters and rival factions edge closer to the endgame.
For now, fans are eagerly anticipating how the story will unfold, but the direction is clearer than ever. The series is set on a four-season trajectory, with its final chapter already in view according to the show’s creator.
