‘Despicable Me’ Creator Reveals Why All Minions Are Male
Fans of the ‘Minions’ movies have frequently questioned why the small yellow henchmen working for Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, are exclusively male. This query has arisen numerous times since the characters first appeared in the 2010 film ‘Despicable Me,’ where they quickly became a beloved aspect of the franchise.
Pierre Coffin, who co-directed the films and lends his voice to the Minions, explained that this choice stemmed from his creative vision while designing the characters.
In a 2015 interview with The Wrap, he provided a straightforward rationale. He stated, “Seeing how dumb and stupid they often are, I just couldn’t imagine Minions being girls.”
Originally conceived as side characters, the Minions quickly evolved into the franchise’s most recognizable figures. Their quirky language, chaotic antics, and simplistic personalities have made them global icons. Over time, they transitioned from background roles to leading characters in their own films, including the ‘Minions’ spin-offs.
Despite the Minions being designed and voiced as male, the franchise features several significant female characters. In the ‘Despicable Me’ series, Julie Andrews voices Gru’s mother Marlena, while Miranda Cosgrove portrays Margo, one of Gru’s adopted daughters. Kristen Wiig voices Lucy Wilde, an Anti-Villain League agent who becomes part of Gru’s family, and in ‘Minions,’ Sandra Bullock voices the villain Scarlet Overkill.
The 2022 film ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ also introduced more prominent female roles, with Taraji P. Henson voicing the leader of the Vicious 6 and Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow, who teaches martial arts to the Minions.
The Minions themselves have recognizable names like Kevin, Stuart, Bob, Otto, Dave, and Tim. Pierre Coffin has shared that these names were chosen with playful meanings. For instance, Kevin suggests a leader figure, while Stuart represents a lazier personality. Bob is associated with being short. Coffin revealed these meanings in the same interview with The Wrap, highlighting that even the names were crafted with humor in mind.
The franchise continues to expand, with a new animated film titled ‘Minions & Monsters’ on the horizon. Directed by Pierre Coffin and written by Brian Lynch, the project will be produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures. This film is set to be the third Minions prequel and the seventh installment in the broader ‘Despicable Me’ universe.
Set in the 1920s, the story follows the Minions as they attempt to create their own monster movie in Old Hollywood. The cast features returning voices alongside new additions such as Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr, and Trey Parker.
The film is slated to premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 21, prior to its theatrical release in the United States on July 1.
