A24 has unveiled the first trailer for Primetime, an upcoming crime drama starring Robert Pattinson, which is already capturing attention for its unique perspective on one of the most contentious true-crime stories in modern television.

As detailed in the trailer release, Primetime marks the narrative feature debut of director Lance Oppenheim and is inspired by the early 2000s NBC news magazine series Dateline NBC, particularly the segments hosted by Chris Hansen.

The film delves into the rise of the sting operation format popularized by To Catch a Predator, where Hansen confronted individuals who thought they were meeting minors, only to be caught on hidden cameras as part of law enforcement efforts.

In Primetime, Robert Pattinson takes on the role of Chris Hansen, reimagining the early evolution of the television format that made Hansen a household name. The trailer showcases a stylized, split-screen format, featuring intense interviews and staged confrontations that echo the structure of the original broadcast segments.

Pattinson’s portrayal of Hansen includes lines that closely reflect the journalist’s on-screen persona. At one point, he states, “What would have happened if I wasn’t here? You see how this looks, right?”

He further challenges his subjects with, “At the end of the day, a man must be held accountable for the decisions that he makes. Would you agree?” The teaser also features the iconic setup where Hansen introduces himself to the camera, saying, “I’m Chris Hansen with Dateline NBC — and you’re able to be a part of television history.”

The film’s official synopsis highlights a journalist whose reporting transformed television by revealing crimes in the digital era. However, the trailer hints at a more complex narrative, suggesting that the story may also explore the ethical implications of how the program was produced and the intersection of entertainment and journalism in true-crime television.

The cast features Skyler Gisondo, Merritt Wever, Phoebe Bridgers, Matthew Maher, Anna Faris, and Sean Bridgers, creating a robust ensemble around Pattinson’s leading role. A24 is producing the project, with Pattinson also taking on a producer role.

Initial descriptions of the film liken its tone to that of Nightcrawler, focusing on the darker aspects of media obsession and televised crime narratives. The teaser embraces this concept, portraying Hansen’s work not merely as journalism but as a spectacle designed for television viewers.

Filming for Primetime occurred in New Orleans under the working title Bluefin Tuna, with production wrapping up in early 2025. The film is directed from a script by Ajon Singh and is supported by producers including Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Fred Berger, and others alongside Pattinson.

Primetime is slated for a theatrical release in September 2026, distributed by A24, although a specific date has yet to be announced.
