The 2024 French television series ‘Zorro’ offers a modern reimagining of the iconic masked hero, featuring Jean Dujardin as an older Don Diego de la Vega who returns to his cape after years of living a quiet life. This series is inspired by the legendary character created by Johnston McCulley in 1919 and is a co-production between France, Belgium, the USA, and Paramount+.

According to details from France Télévisions and various media reports, the show presents a more mature and European interpretation of the Zorro myth. It follows Don Diego, now a prominent public figure in Los Angeles, California, in 1821.

Having taken over his father’s role as mayor and married to Doña Gabriella, he appears to lead a stable life. However, he soon discovers that corruption and injustice still plague the town, prompting him to revive the Zorro persona, which complicates his home life as his wife remains unaware of his secret identity.

The trailer for ‘Zorro’ was officially unveiled by IGN, providing fans with their first glimpse of Jean Dujardin’s return as the legendary masked hero. The preview showcases a blend of action, humor, and drama, while hinting at the older, more complex version of Don Diego as he navigates the challenges of bringing Zorro back into his life. The footage has garnered attention for its cinematic style and modern European approach to the classic swashbuckling character.

The series intertwines action, drama, romance, and comedy, focusing heavily on Don Diego’s double life and the personal challenges that arise. His secret identity becomes increasingly difficult to manage as he strives to balance his roles as a husband, a mayor, and a masked vigilante. The narrative also delves into how aging transforms a hero who was once fearless, rendering this version of Zorro more relatable and emotionally nuanced.

Jean Dujardin leads the cast as Don Diego de la Vega and Zorro, joined by Audrey Dana as his wife Doña Gabriella, André Dussollier as his father Don Alejandro, and Salvatore Ficarra as Bernardo, his loyal servant. The supporting cast features characters from Los Angeles, soldiers, and other figures who contribute to the political and social conflicts within the story.

In production notes shared by France Télévisions and co-producers, the creative team expressed their desire for a Zorro who feels older, more realistic, and emotionally layered. One producer described the series as “very European,” emphasizing character drama over simple hero action. Writer Benjamin Charbit noted that the series aims to blend comedy with drama and romance in a natural manner, despite the challenges of achieving that balance.

Filming took place in southern Spain, primarily in the Almería region, chosen for its landscapes reminiscent of the American West. Large sets were constructed, including a version of Los Angeles, along with villages and interior locations filmed in Toledo. Post-production was conducted in Belgium, highlighting the international nature of the project.

‘Zorro’ premiered on September 6, 2024, and subsequently aired in Belgium and France on RTL TVI and France 2.

The series consists of eight episodes and has been recognized for its substantial production budget and cinematic quality. France Télévisions also introduced an interactive feature on its platform, allowing viewers to create personalized Zorro-themed posters.

Oscar winner Jean Dujardin (The Artist) stars in this eight-episode series, which is subtitled in English and premieres June 30 exclusively in the U.S. and Canada on Kino Lorber’s MHz Choice. The launch will feature two episodes and a “making of” special, followed by weekly episodes every Tuesday until August 11.

Reception has been mixed; while some French media outlets praised the humor, performances, and modern interpretation of the character, others felt the series struggled with tonal balance. Notably, Jean Dujardin’s performance has been highlighted as a significant strength, particularly his ability to transition between comedy and drama in the dual role of Don Diego and Zorro.

Overall, this rendition of Zorro is presented as a fresh yet unconventional take on a classic hero, emphasizing personal conflict, aging, and identity over traditional swashbuckling adventure.
