Fans Discover Hidden Link Between ‘The Boroughs’ and ‘Stranger Things’
Netflix’s latest series ‘The Boroughs’ is generating considerable buzz online, primarily due to its intriguing connection to the creators of ‘Stranger Things’. Produced by the Duffer Brothers’ Upside Down Pictures, the show has quickly become a hot topic among fans eager to uncover any potential links to their iconic series.
Set in a serene retirement community in New Mexico, ‘The Boroughs’ initially presents a tranquil environment filled with golf carts and friendly neighbors. However, the calm is disrupted when a group of elderly residents uncovers a perilous alien threat lurking beneath their town.
The series features a talented cast, including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, and Alfre Woodard, and has received positive early reviews, boasting a 96 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.
While the storyline is fresh, many viewers find it reminiscent of ‘Stranger Things’. Some fans have even dubbed it “Stranger Things with retirees” due to its ensemble dynamic and blend of friendship with sci-fi peril. This comparison has intensified as more episodes have been released.
The conversation gained traction on Reddit, where a viewer highlighted a potential hidden visual detail. In episode four, a shot of distant mountains, when flipped upside down, resembles Vecna’s cave and Max’s mental escape space from ‘Stranger Things’. The fan noted that the production company name, Upside Down Pictures, adds to the impression that this moment was deliberate.
Despite the fan theories, the creators of ‘The Boroughs’ have clarified that the show is not set in the ‘Stranger Things’ universe. In an interview with Polygon, co-creator Jeffrey Addis stated, “I want to be so clear that this is not at all the case. If you like ‘Stranger Things’, we hope you’ll like our show, but it is not in any way in the ‘Stranger Things’ universe. It is separate.”
Co-creator Will Matthews also addressed the online theories, acknowledging that while they are not accurate, they are intriguing concepts. He remarked, “It’s not true, but it is a good idea.”

Matt Duffer has also commented on the parallels between the two series. He explained that both narratives center around a group of outsiders confronting strange and dangerous forces. He noted, “The Boroughs probably shares the most DNA with ‘Stranger Things’ because it is also about a group of outsiders dealing with an otherworldly threat.” He added that the primary distinction lies in the age of the characters, who navigate their challenges in golf carts instead of bicycles.
Despite the clarifications, discussions continue to thrive. Many fans believe the creative similarities between the two shows are too significant to overlook, while others argue it simply reflects the same creative team exploring similar themes in a different context.
What is evident is that ‘The Boroughs’ has captured attention swiftly. Whether viewers perceive it as a new sci-fi tale or a spiritual sibling to ‘Stranger Things’, it has already emerged as one of Netflix’s most discussed new releases.
