‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Fans React to Controversial Character Return Before Season Premiere
‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ has returned, and fans quickly took to social media to express their strong opinions after the announcement of a controversial character’s comeback.
The latest season of the Paramount+ crime drama debuted on May 28, and while many viewers were thrilled to see familiar faces from the BAU team, discussions soon turned to Elias Voit, portrayed by Zach Gilford.
Promotional materials shared on Instagram indicated that Voit would play a significant role in the new season, sparking mixed reactions among fans.
Voit, also known as Sicarius, emerged as one of the reboot’s most notorious villains, having established a covert network of serial killers. Since his introduction, he has been central to some of the show’s most intense storylines, leading some long-time viewers to feel that the focus on him has become excessive.
After Paramount+ released a teaser showcasing scenes from previous seasons featuring Voit, fans flooded the comments with varied responses. Some expressed their fatigue with the ongoing storyline.
“We’re tired of Voit. We want his storyline to end, it’s getting stale guys. This better be the last season about him,” one fan commented.
Another viewer added, “Ugh we are still on this guy?! Literally skipped last season hoping his storyline would get wrapped up.”
Conversely, some fans defended Voit, asserting that he is one of the most compelling villains introduced in recent years.
“Hot take I DO love him. I just need our MAIN characters to have bigger storylines again too,” one fan remarked.
Another individual stated, “I mean…Voit has been one heck of an antagonist, you can’t deny it.”
This debate underscores a broader concern among fans regarding ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’. While many appreciate the darker, serialized storytelling of the reboot, others long for the earlier format that focused on different cases each episode rather than a singular villain arc.

Nevertheless, the writers appear to be far from concluding Voit’s narrative. The season 3 finale hinted at a more emotional and unstable trajectory for the character. Rather than simply depicting him as a cold-blooded killer, the show has begun to delve into his mental state and the repercussions of his past actions.
Zach Gilford also discussed the character’s future in an interview with Good Housekeeping back in 2025. He noted that Voit may continue grappling with his darker impulses.
“Voit knows he can’t bring anyone back or change what he’s done,” Gilford explained. “Even if he thought he would never kill or hurt someone again, there’s parts of him that are still there.”
He further elaborated by saying, “There’s always a chance he could re-associate back into that character again.”
For now, it seems ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ intends to keep Voit at the forefront of the narrative, regardless of fan sentiment. The character’s return has undeniably polarized viewers online, but it has also generated significant buzz around the new season.
One thing is clear: fans will be eagerly watching to see if Elias Voit’s story finally concludes, or if the series has more surprises in store for him.
