‘For All Mankind’ Showrunners Discuss the Impact of Season 5’s Heartbreaking Death

The Season 5 finale of ‘For All Mankind’ concludes on an emotionally heavy note. In an interview with Gold Derby, showrunners Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi revealed that the episode marks the end of a long and painful chapter for the Baldwin family, with only one member remaining alive.

By the episode’s conclusion, nearly the entire Baldwin family has perished. Ed Baldwin succumbs to cancer earlier in the season, while Kelly Baldwin dies on Titan, Saturn’s moon, during a mission that also confirms the existence of alien life in the show’s universe. This leaves Alex Baldwin as the sole survivor, the son of Kelly and grandson of Ed.

The showrunners clarified that Kelly’s death was not part of the original plan. Wolpert stated, “We knew Ed was going to die this season — that was always the plan.” However, Kelly’s fate evolved during the writing process. He added, “Kelly was a surprise to us.”

Initially, the writers were hesitant to kill her off. Wolpert mentioned their strong reaction when the idea was proposed, saying, “We were like, ‘We can’t do that; her father just died, that’s crazy!’” Yet, as the narrative progressed, they felt that the ending resonated emotionally.

Kelly’s final moments unfold on Titan, where she makes a significant sacrifice during a mission that leads to one of the show’s biggest discoveries. She confirms the presence of alien life in the form of methane-based microbes found in a unique liquid environment. The last image of her depicts her surrounded by glowing organisms in the water.

This conclusion sparked some confusion among viewers, with some speculating that she might still be alive. The showrunners dismissed this notion. Nedivi humorously addressed wild fan theories, saying, “Kelly is going to come out of the water as a giant space alien.” However, Wolpert clarified that this is not the case, stating, “It’s not regenerative or transformative.”

He explained that the microbes are based on real scientific discussions the writers had with advisors. They aimed to envision life that is not carbon-based yet still plausible. Wolpert noted that this concept has been part of the series’ long-term vision since the beginning.

According to him, the discovery of alien life serves not only as a shocking moment but also sets the stage for the final season. He stated, “This is us planting our flag in the sand and setting up what will be the driving force of Season 6.”

The upcoming season will delve into the implications of this discovery for humanity. The writers suggest it will alter perceptions of life in the universe and propel the story into new directions.

Despite the pain of Kelly’s death for both characters and viewers, the writers believe it aligns with her character. Wolpert explained that Kelly always embraced her father Ed’s adventurous spirit, feeling a sense of duty to remain on Titan during the mission.

The Season 5 finale also advances the narrative surrounding Mars and its independence movement. Alex Baldwin and other colonists achieve freedom from Earth, significantly altering the political landscape of the series. The writers likened this shift to historical revolutions on Earth, illustrating how distant colonies frequently seek autonomy from central authority.

Looking ahead, the show will leap forward in time to 2020 in its final season. The creators confirmed that some familiar characters will make a return, while others may not. They also indicated that Mars will continue to play a crucial role due to its significance in future space exploration.

The writers also confirmed that they do not intend to eliminate characters solely for shock value moving forward. Nedivi mentioned that some characters may simply exit the story instead of facing death.

‘For All Mankind’ is now gearing up for its final season, focusing more on space exploration and the ramifications of discovering alien life. While the conclusion of Season 5 sees the loss of key Baldwin family members, it also paves the way for a broader and more uncertain future for humanity within the show’s universe.
