Tom Holland Discusses R-Rated Punisher’s Role in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Tom Holland has addressed fan concerns regarding how Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will fit into Spider-Man: Brand New Day, particularly given the character’s violent and R-rated background. These comments emerged during an interview with Empire magazine, as the film progresses under the direction of Destin Daniel Cretton.
The Punisher, known as Frank Castle, is characterized by his extreme violence and uncompromising approach to justice. Bernthal first portrayed the character in Netflix’s Marvel series, later reprising the role in Daredevil: Born Again and more recently in the MCU Special Presentation The Punisher: One Last Kill. In these appearances, the character has operated in a dark and brutal world, contrasting sharply with the typical tone of Spider-Man stories.
As Brand New Day introduces Frank Castle into Peter Parker’s universe, fans are curious about how Marvel will balance the character’s intensity with the lighter, more mainstream superhero film vibe. Holland directly addressed these concerns, stating that the creative team has worked to maintain the essence of the character while adapting him to fit the film’s tone.
“I know that there are concerns about taking a sort of R-rated character and putting him into one of these movies, but the way that we’ve designed the world around him feels very authentic to the Frank Castle we know,” Holland shared in the interview. His remarks suggest that the film will not compromise the character, even if adjustments are made for a wider audience.
He also hinted that the filmmakers have discovered ways to address the Punisher’s more graphic traits without disrupting the tone of a Spider-Man film. “There are fun ways to get around the fact that he swears all the time and kills people,” Holland added. This indicates a focus on creative storytelling rather than a complete softening of the character.
Jon Bernthal also spoke about Frank Castle’s mindset in the upcoming film. According to Bernthal, the character is not intended to fit into a conventional superhero partnership. “Frank Castle is perfectly at peace in a world of absolute darkness,” he stated. “He’s not looking for a buddy, he’s not looking for a friend, he’s not looking for a hand to pull him out of the hole that he’s in. He’s fine living in there. In fact, all he wants to do is dig deeper.”
Despite this, Bernthal suggested there could still be a complex dynamic between Castle and Peter Parker. “I think, begrudgingly, Frank would tell you, if he had to be honest, he does care about Peter,” he added. This sets the stage for a potential uneasy alliance between the two characters, rather than a traditional partnership.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to explore how Peter Parker interacts with more extreme figures in the MCU. Based on the cast and early comments from those involved, the film seems to be balancing various tones and character styles while preserving the core identity of Spider-Man.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for release in the United States on July 31, as part of Phase Six of the MCU.
